I was wondering if it makes sense to,pack a pair of dark "dressy" jeans if all you are packing is a pair of hiking type shoes?

Also, learning a proper way to fold your clothes and belongings goes a long way in reducing pack size.

You guys are being too critical. The picture is more of a list than a visual representation of scale. I just cut and pasted pics of the items from the Net scaling/sizing them while pasting into the sheet. Of course, scaling is approximate. Although, I looked again and my scaling is not that far off. 11" MacBook Air is shown next to a Nikon D810 with a 28-300 zoom. Sizes are comparable.

P.S. Also, I am not getting ready to hitchhike my way through Europe for a year. I wish I could, but I am not 25 anymore. This is more of an exercise in learning from others about how to pack better and more efficiently for me, as I've started to lose that ability lately.

So what are you just packing for fun then?

You ultimately have to pack differently for a ski vacation versus a beach vacation. When we go on a driving vacation these days I am likely taking my man bike and possibly golf clubs, plus I'll need some casual clothes, so it is hard to,pack light because in addition to clothes, I would have to take gear like golf shoes, biking shoes, clubs, a bike helmet etc. It gets hard to pack real light.

Oh yeah and now that I am a middle aged guy, I like to bring my own pillows because wherever I travel the pillows are crap.

Packing for driving trip is a pleasure. I can take whatever the heck I want! I take a 60-lb Pelican suitcase of lenses with me on a day shoot just because I can't decide which one I'd wanna use. That's partly a reason for my packing disorder - a roomy vehicle discourages smart packing.

As far as Europe - planning a trip over there in a few weeks (Czech Republic and Austria). Not for a year, of course. But I do want to try and go light this time. My goal - no checked luggage. Not because I have to, but because I want to see if I can manage it.

One option is to just pack the right side of your picture and no additional clothes. Then buy what you need as you go and see it it all fits at the end of the trip.

Just get into the habit of doing laundry on the road and it's all good.
The small bags are key to staying organized. If you need something from your bag, instead of digging through and pulling out everything, you might need to only pull out a few small bags or cubes and then they are easy to put back and everything is still neatly organized.

For primarily travel rather than actual backpacking in the wilderness just get a panel loader. Everything stays naturally organized.
