Kristen Odland @Kristen_Odland
AM skate news: Jyrki Jokipakka and Matt Bartkowski are rotating on a pair. Dennis Wideman and Brett Kulak are together.

I think most comments are pretty sarcastic and that people realize this isn't much different than when we "signed" Grossman.

My biggest concern is that Gulutzan actually plays him

If it's expansion draft fodder/depth in case we move Engelland or Wideman, I'm fine.

If Gulutzan gives him minutes like he had in Vancouver, then screw this. But I don't think that's happening.

Two left shots on one D pairing? We all know that can never ever work

Meanwhile, Kulak and Jokipakka are thinking. "Here's this guy with NHL experience practicing with the team... I better figure out a way to play better and keep my spot on the team".

I would imagine that in any normally functioning NHL team good dialogue between GM and coach is key when bringing in players. But with players like Vey, Chaisson, Grossman and now Bartkowski, I wondering if Gulutzen has Treliving´s ear more or less than the average coach does.

Do people even read the early post from Sureloss. He justified the move as one made to meet Expansion draft requirements. This does not have to be another Gulutzen sucks thread.

GG has also played all of these guys with the big squad. Bartkowski will definitely get ice time, and it will be ugly.

PTO should be to avoid sending someone down on waivers is my guess. 2 weeks puts us at the trade deadline, which is a big waiver day, no?

Shhh, you keep up this "rational" business and we'll all be stuck with pitchforks and torches we can't use. Is that what you want? Huh?

Nothing move that is for expansion draft only. Not a big deal and if this is the signing that destroys the Flames there are far bigger issues we need to worry about.

This is a curious signing from my perspective.

Obviously Bartkowski isn't an upgrade on what the Flames currently have - and for the sake of argument, even if he is, it is negligible.

So, I tend to agree with this signing as meeting the expansion draft requirements.

The question I have about this is - does this mean that Jokipakka and Engelland are definitely not in the plans for next season? Perhaps this is just a 'just in case' signing. Is Jokipakka asking for too much? Flames are just not interested in bringing Jokipakka back on a 1-way, and Jokipakka doesn't want to sign a 2-way? Jokipakka would definitely meet the expansion requirements.

I am ok with the Flames bringing him in, and even better if Gulutzan was the driver behind it. Maybe Gulutzan has some insight into how Bartkowski was utilized and knew it just wasn't a good fit for him in Van, and feels he can be better here? As long as he doesn't play favorites with him, having a coach familiar with a player is a good thing usually.

Interesting and (at least for me) really unexpected. I thought for sure the Flames were going to get Jokipakka re-signed in short order here. I guess they still might, but I am less sure about it now, and wouldn't be surprised if he was simply walked away as a FA in the off-season.

maybe this gets us through the expansion draft in June and we can resign either of those on July 1?

So he's going to trade for Ryan O'Reilly in the off season?
