The altitude thing i agree with...it was a cop out.
However for teams that rarely play in the afternoons at home, and going on the road for a game that has a body time of noon for the visitors, it makes a difference.
Players are such creatures of habit and routine, particularly on game days, it's no surprise that they struggle at times. Hell, most of these guys would just be laying down for game day nap somewhere around the end of the second period if this was a home game on a Sunday.
