If Wideman doesn't fetch anything at the deadline, then i would hope that he's demoted to the 3rd pair. Maybe Engelland can move up and play with Brodie again like in the playoffs a couple seasons ago. I would be ok with a Wideman and Kulak/Jokipakka pairing that plays just 10-12 minutes a game instead of seeing Wideman play 20-24.

Get whatever you can from Wideman and move on. I would rather dump him for nothing and promote Engellend to the 2nd pair and have Jokipakka, Kulak, and Wotherspoon as our 5-7

We really don't know whats taken place in this regard other than "they've been trying to trade him". I really think his NMC and more so his salary has been the limiting factor. Maybe the Flames didn't want to retain any salary and that was the deal breaker. Like I said, the fact that his contract is expiring shouldn't be overlooked.
We're all speculating as fans do, which i enjoy, but for some people to think he's a negative asset is pretty funny.

All he could get is coffee for Treliving.
In all seriousness though, there are way too many things preventing him from having much value beyond a real late round pick. This is even evaluating him as #4 defenceman as the NMC and his contract, even at 50% retained, make him hard to move. 2.5 million for some extra depth isn't a budget saving more nor a real upgrade unless a team has space for him on the bottom pairing.

I think a 3rd or 4th. Could be a good #5 on a playoff team.

You've gotta love CP: Wideman is horrible and should be in the press box... I wonder if we could get a 2nd for him.
I've resigned myself to the fact he will be on the Flames for the rest of the season.

2nd round pick and an expiring contract/cap dump
He may not be good, but teams need depth in the playoffs

Realistically nothing. I don't think he's that bad of a player, but his contract is going to make it next to impossible to move him.
If the Flames retain 50% I could see a mid-round pick, 3rd-5th depending on how desperate teams are. Schultz got traded for a 3rd, and he was a tire fire. Defenseman have value.
That said, I don't think teams are that desperate right now otherwise he would have been moved already. That or Wideman hasn't approved of a trade yet. It's possible a team or two have made an offer and Wideman refused to waive.

I didn't think much of Wideman when he first came here and I still don't think much of him at all. I still laugh at his attempt at the shootout when he was back with the Blues... HILARIOUS!!!!!!
Would be nice to get a piece back if we did trade him. He'd probs be the next Glencross.

Looking at Wideman's player usage chart, he's not as bad are people are claiming. And I've always said Wideman is better than his reputation, given that he's an easy whipping boy for fans pointing to the penalties, salary cap, and goals against.
Wideman has been about midway between offensive starts and defensive starts. Although the Flames as a whole are possession black hole (minus Backlund and a few others), Wideman hasn't been as bad as Jokipakka or Engelland, and faces competition similiar to that of Hamilton, Brodie and to a lesser extent Giordano. He's on pace for 30points or so, which isn't bad for 17 mins a night. Considering he gets just over a minute of PP time per game, that's really not bad. He also PKs just as much as Stajan.
The numbers don't lie, Wideman is a decent player. I expect he'll get a 3rd or better if salary is retained

Wideman is to slow to get the puck out of the defensive Leading to many scary moments every game. At least the coaches have figured out that he had been affecting the power play adversely and Joe seldom plays the pp. it us no accident the power play has improved. Unfortunately it took the coaching staff too long to figure this out. All they had to do was look at the improvement in the pp last season after he was hurt and later injured. We need to send him to the farm and alternate 2 of Kulak, Joki and Wotherspoon. We will have a much better team and believe me these 3 young guys will not make as many mistakes as Wideman and they can actually skate.
