Yeah, someone from the city WOULD recommend Pier 39 and be scared of Oakland
Haha well I was in Oakland late tonight to play hockey and as soon as I walked out of the rink, two guys started brawling right in the middle of the street.
One guy beat the crap out of the other guy. Not sure if I would recommend Oakland to tourists with kids :P

If you're from Calgary and bringing a 9 year old on a 3 day trip, you should stay in San Francisco proper. Most of the stuff you'll want to see is there, and you won't need a car.
I'll send you a PM on accommodation deals.
The one thing I haven't seen mentioned is the aquarium of the bay. Located at Pier 39, it was included in the city pass when we went, and is pretty neat. The walk through tunnel is an experience a 9 year old would probably like if yu haven't done one before.
I'd also recommend stopping at Ghirardelli for a chocolate or treat of some kind.
Otherwise as mentioned the food in Chinatown is great. There is also a neat farmer's market at the ferry building, but a 9 year old may not enjoy that.

If you are into seafood, I really like Scoma in SF. They have their own boats and catch everything fresh daily.
I like Swan's Oyster Depot for my SF seafood fix.
Agreed that it's a foodie's dream city there. Although a lot of places I'd think of aren't really geared towards 9 year old kids. The French Laundry is worth a trip all by itself.

To add to my aquarium by the bay recommendation above, I would note that if you are a Calgary Zoo member, you get 50% off day admissions to both the aquarium by the bay AND the San Francisco zoo.
- I would recommend continuing west towards Ghirardelli Square and visiting the chocolate shop. I would recommend getting a sundae from the chocolate shop.
When I went there, my aunt, who grew up in the area, said this was the one thing I had to do. I thought it was silly that she recommended it so strongly, but we were in the area, so stopped in. Best sundae ever!!

I don't know how 9 year old friendly it is but grabbing lunch from one of the cafes in mission and a bottle of wine and drinking in Delores park overlooking downtown San Fran was a really cool experience that seemed local rather than touristy.
There's a playground and maybe there was a splash pool but the main attraction was drinking in the park.
Also mission beach cafe has the best bacon ever and excellent eggs bene and breakfast skillet.

We rented a car in San Fran and I had a ton of fun driving those streets but I am the type who likes driving in new cities where as the people I am often with call me crazy.

San Francisco is definitely the place to put your manual driving skills to the test. There's nothing quite like being at a red light on a 30-degree grade hill, with some Bentley a foot from your rear bumper.

Go to Oakland. Try to internalize that right across the Bay from one of the richest, most decadent cities in all of the (Great Again) United States is a city that is so decayed with poverty, racial unrest, and violence, that even white, privileged people from Canada won't go there. Show your child that the 'American Dream' has failed millions of people and try to explain to him that despite the Kerry Commission proving that the US government tried to destroy the Black inner cities, some of them still exist. Hand out a $20 dollar bill to every person that you see who looks like they haven't eaten in a week and try to think about how the government of that country gives 154 million dollars per week to the oil industry.
Then go back to 'The City' and get some clams at 'The Waterfront' on The Embarcadero. Great clams there.
