I think this article highlights the importance of soon to be UFA Engelland. He is our only true heavyweight that can play a regular minute.

If Lucic, Maroon or Kassian push around or run our top players when we play the Oilers who besides Engelland can handle them? Maybe Ferland? Who else?

Bring up Hunter Smith or Kanzig.

Kanzig would get walked at every opportunity.

Sign Maroon in the offseason. Yeah, I said it.

But goons like McGrattan? They don't belong in the league anymore. You can't afford to have them on the ice at any time of the game.
Read the damn article that's exactly what Francis says. Good grief.

Neither can play a regular NHL shift right now and not hurt our team. Maybe Smith in a few seasons, not sure about Kanzig at NHL level.

He has another year after this season on his current deal.

Hathaway / Tkachuk have been the only ones that are consistently in the other team's business and Engelland has been our only true stick-up-for-teammates guy.
Brouwer set the tone of weakness when he basically shrugged his shoulders about the slashes against Johnny in the Minnesota game and said "I do that too" (paraphrasing). I don't care what you do you better at least act like you've got your teammates back. I thought this guy was supposed to bring a bunch of leadership to the team.

Brouwer is terrible. I can't believe he got an a before Backs. Brought in to play tough and chip in offensively occasionally and does neither.

Maybe his hand is still hurt is the only excuse I can make for him because he looks uninvested in this team. 100% agree with criticism of him

NO ONE is suggesting "gooning it up" and no one mentioned it but you.

This year's team feels like a first-season expansion team that was just assembled and has no established chemistry or ####s to give.

Finally this gets some light. The Flames have been soft since Sutter days.

Some still don't think that intimidation is a thing. Just imagine a dressing room after a game when the team got bullied. How did it feel when Lucia and Kassian were mocking the Flames at warmup skate? Doesn't sound like fun.

Yeah Smith is probably closer. His numbers look decent but haven't had much of a chance to watch Stockton games.

We can lose Brouwer to Vegas and it probably would be a good thing.

Right now, there are no real ramifications for running over Johnny, but if the only ramification is that you get to run over Johnny and then kick someone else's ass immediately afterward, then what kind of deterrent is that?

This is why Lucic was such a HUGE add for Edmonton in the off-season. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why everyone was focused on whether or not Lucic would be able to keep up with McDavid. He doesn't have to keep up with McDavid. He just has to keep up with whomever takes a run at McDavid. The number of players in the game today that can inflict a Lucic-level of punishment on someone, while also having a Lucic-level of skill is incredibly small. We don't have a single one of them in our entire system, and I can't even think of one that would be readily available if we went looking either.

Our most obvious holes are a top-six F, a #4D and a starting G. These are well-known, but if there's one thing I've learned this season, it's that a "Lucic-clone" is right up there too.
The highlighted is 100% correct and those are probably the teams best needs. Brouwer was suppose to be that "Lucic-clone" but he sucks.

Agreed about Brouwer. MAJOR disappointment so far. Versteeg has been way better in my mind.

At least Brouwer/Bennett/Versteeg looked kinda good yesterday.

The lack of overall team toughness is real. I'm surprised more people don't talk about it. As an observer, it seems to stem from a lack of cohesion but that is admittedly speculative.

As much as this team has spent on "character" guys you do wish they'd be harder to play against.

I'm not sure why anyone should have expected more of Brouwer.
He is more or less on a career average goals/points pace.
He is still the possession black hole he always has been.
This is exactly what we should have expected from him, no?

Wasn't he supposed to be a possession monster? I thought that was his deal?

No, I think the opposite. In StL anyway - I don't know about CHI or WSH.
I think he was the one the 'Hero Charts' made famous around here during free agency
He was the intangibles guy, bang bodies, drive the net, create space, etc
