I'm very happy that the world juniors were played in Europe that year. If they were played on NA ice I think Tkachuk and Matthews almost double their production resulting in Tkachuk going higher. Obviously Tkachuk is much better suited for the NHL than Jesse, it's so blatantly obvious. One embraces the grind and is a supreme competitor, the other throws temper tantrums, and obviously is struggling with the speed and size of NHL players. Playing on European ice at the WJ is never seen as a detriment to North American players but it is.

Maybe I'm crazy but I take him 3rd, maybe even second. How much will the kid produce in his prime ? 60+ points while playing 24+ minutes a night ? He is a offensive dynamo, and his defence is really good for his age. Kid has elite d potential all over him.

I excuse in advance for my English. I have a question regarding the individual trophies. Why do we actually care that much? I mean trophies in general, I'm not talking about Tkachuk for Calder.
Last season NHL fans in Sweden went berserk about the Doughty vs Karlsson. For what good? I don't think less of Karlsson because he lost.
Most of the nomination have the same discussion year after year; Bergeron or Kopitar for Selke? Can you win Hart or Norris if your team doesn't reach the Playoffs? Do the voters watch western teams? What is the definition of MVP? How is it possible that it is the GMs that decide who will win the Vezina?
My point is that (for me) it doesn't matter who wins the awards. The only thing that matters is how the team performs. I will enjoy every game Tkachuk play for the Flames regardless if he wins the Calder or not. Most likely a Calder winner can demand a bigger salary when that day comes, no?
Would like to hear what you guys have to say about this. Explain the hype for a Swedish Flame

You can debate the choice all you want but it wasn't a snub.

It was a snub, Johnny was the most electric and consistent rookie that year. Forsberg fizzled out down the stretch and Ekblad as good as he was didnt have the consistency of Johnny. He played in the west. That is the reason why he lost. I am sure you are someone who can tell me how Jose Theodore was in 2002 . . . . . and that Jarome did not get snubbed either.

The only reason Elblad won was he was 18, Johnny was obviously better as a rookie, people also forget that Stone got 2nd place as well which was laughable. Don't really care, I wouldn't trade Johnny for Ekblad or Stone

Jarome was robbed. Losing to Ekblad wasn't a snub - it was a choice between three really good candidates. IDK why you are mentioning Forsberg.

I like Gaudreau as much as anyone but straight up for Ekblad - I'd have to think long and hard.

If Laine misses considerable time, Tkachuk could be runner up.
But it's Mathews' to lose.

I guess we need to injure Matthews on January 23.

You are dead on (exactly right).
The awards are something to talk about, but why people get bet out of shape is beyond me. And yes, winning as a team is all that matters - and none of the rookies are helping their team win any more than Tkachuk is.

He looks like a vet out there. He's on our defacto #1 line and he's scoring game-winning goals.
I don't care if he wins the Calder, I'm just glad he's on the team.

That's good too, because he doesn't stand a chance unless he is leading in points when the season ends. Even if its close its going east.

The Calder went to Auston Matthews the second he was drafted by Toronto.

Tkachuk will Finnish 3rd or 4th in the voting is my guess. Regardless Flames fans are glad he slipped past the Oilers onto our team.
