Between Sandra Jansen and some other things in the last few months, im starting to believe that criticizing any female politician about anything will be called misogyny.
Political correctness running rampant i guess.
That's the entire reason why... because a woman was the target. Even though her gender was not.
When did fat shaming go out of style? Shouldn't we be encouraged to make healthy lifestyle choices? If someone was smoking 5 packs a day, wouldn't we be able to criticise them for making a bad choice and burdening the health care system?
Ironically the best thing we could do for healthcare is all start smoking again, a population that dies of heart attacks in their late 60's is way cheaper than one that lives to be 85 but is gaga and needs their diapers changed daily.

Assuming you actually smoke them all and it takes about 4 minutes to burn one, and no doubt it's gotta be a 25 pack if you smoke that much, that's 8 hours and 20 minutes a day smoking. I don't even wanna know what that person's voice sounds like.

I think this all much ado about nothing (or very little anyway). But it is an interesting question to ask: would the Sun (or whatever paper this was) have been as likely to run the same headline if it was an overweight male health minister? I don't actually know the answer but I wouldn't be shocked to learn that the answer is "no" (probably impossible to actually measure though). Anyone recall any headlines mocking Klein's weight?

The Sun mocked Klein all the time. Headlines alluding to his drinking. Editorial cartoons depicting him as squat and red-nosed. The whole nine yards.
Basically, it's less socially acceptable to be mean to women than to men.

Pretty much.
Smokers get it all the time. Even passive aggressive 'coughs' from someone who decided to walk right past you while you smoke.
Its an interesting question, if you were an active addict you couldn't work in a rehab, if you are actively unhealthy can you be considered fit to be a health minister?
I am troubled that we have decided that the Deputy Premier is "unhealthy" without a physician's report on her health.
(I seem to recall that Mr Klein had serious health issues that we let slide because of his likeability)

From an occupational standpoint, it really shouldn't matter. A cigarette smoking doc suffering from chronic pie overdose has no bearing on the patients state of health, nor does it make them incompetent. If their job was to be judgmental I guess it would be relevant, but their expected role is to objectively pass on the facts/diagnosis and recommend treatment based on the evidence.
To undermine a doctors advice because they aren't personally following it is straw man logic.
As an an aside I don't know of single physician who smokes. Interestingly I do know a Neurosurgeon who is an avid motorcycle rider, or as he calls it a "donor-cycle".

The problem is, I think many in society have failed to realize that "sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me" is inherently wrong. Take it from someone who was suicidal for most of their teen years, words are often hard to shrug off, and they are often much harder to heal than physical harm.
I didn't see a big problem with the Herald's headline itself, but I think that judging a politician's ability to do their job based on their physical appearance is really immature. Why does it matter that the health minister is overweight? Is her health directly affecting her ability to do the job asked of her? And to be clear, gender doesn't matters here. If it were a male health minister, and he was overweight, it still shouldn't matter.
