2015 Jeep Cherokee 3.6L V6. We average around 10L/100km in summer, and so far 12.5L/100km in winter (when temp is < 4 degrees, 4WD automatically kicks in. No way to override). I've also gotten down to 6.8L/100km on highways. The fuel economy on such a heavy vehicle really impresses me.

Our previous vehicles never displayed fuel economy, so I was always oblivious. But now that I can see it, I do make a conscious effort to drive less aggressively.

I'm also curious what sort of sample the average is calculated with - t's definitely not a lifetime average since I see fluctuations far more rapidly than I'd expect. If the economy is 10L/100km after driving a year, it would take more than a half-hour drive at 9L/100km to make it go down to 9.9.

I don't have a car, I use Car2Go when I need a vehicle, and it runs on smugness and a bit of condescension.

PS: or 36 mpg. I assumed better than that, although I drive maybe 2-3 times a month so I can still look down on you all from the lofty heights of virtue.

2010 Kia Forte. About 9L/100km in the city. At 10,000 km per year, it comes to $1080/yr before carbon tax. Carbon tax would be a mere $40.50/yr.

Doesn't really matter to me, that's what I pay for Amazon Prime per year haha

I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado...

So far its averaging 13.3l/100 km I've gone about 12k so far with about a 50.50 split between city and highway driving. Very pleased with it.

I wish we used KM per L. While I hate using miles and gallons for anything, I think from a practical standpoint its a bit more useful.

2002 S10, about 14 l/100km and around 3000km per year.
2015 Subaru Impreza 8.2 l/100km and around 7000km per year.

Various bikes, 1.5 l/100km(beer) around 4000km/year.

But that would make it just as bad a measurement as mpg, as Mr Bumface pointed out earlier, and is also explained very well here:

I am driving an F-250 Diesel now and am getting about 16.0l/100km (although that is only 5000km in) but with diesel being 10c/l cheaper than gas right now, I am not complaining.

The one difference may be usage, I commuted in my truck about 50% of the miles so that may have driven my mileage down.
Interesting. I don't have a heavy foot, but I'm not slow either. My towing is probably 2,000 km a year, most of which is a light aluminum boat (so, barely towing). The rest of my driving is commuting to/from work.

In summer I was down around 12.9, but winter gas usually costs me another 1 L/100km.

The energy density difference (i.e. the amount of energy the burned fuel contains) accounts for about half of that fuel usage difference (~18L/100km gas -> ~16L/100km diesel).

Diesel = 35.8MJ/L
Gasoline = 34.2 MJ/L

18L/100km * 35.8MJ/L / 34.2 MJ/L = 17.2 L/100km

The other thing your diesel engine gets is better thermal efficiency because the Diesel Cycle is more thermodynamically efficient than the Otto Cycle (gasoline engines) at the compression ratios in modern engines.

Diesel = 62% theoretical real gas efficiency
Otto = 58% theoretical real gas efficiency

17.2 L/100km * (1/.62) / (1/.58) = 16.1 L/100km

I would wager that your extra commuting in the lighter F-150 is coincidentally offset by the extra weight of the F-250 diesel, and everything else boils down to thermodynamics.

Cost per kilometre is another story obviously, but that may change in the future as the carbon tax is scheduled to go up faster for diesel than gasoline because energy density is roughly proportional to C02 emissions. Also, the initial cost difference and differences in maintenance of a Diesel vs. Gasoline engine are not to be ignored either.

I don't know, I never found l/100k that impractical.

Given the units, I find it easier to figure out how far I can go on what I have left in the tank when it's expressed as 8l/100km vs 12.8 km/l. To each their own.

Car A uses 333 gallons
Car B uses 400 gallons -> 777 more than Car A
Car C uses 286 gallons -> 47 less gallons than Car A

That is what I call a dumb measurement.
67 gallons more

edit: you're just dealing with % difference better or worse rather than flat like L/100km, would just be nice if all of NA used the same ratio order. just make it so the better car mileage is always going up or always going down if you know what I mean.

Just kidding. Using a bunch of fancy pants math & kWh mumbo jumbo, it has a roughly equivalent MPG of 90-100.

13L/100km

Ford Explorer Sport 2017

The thing burns gas pretty hard, but it's fast and fun to drive.

I used an app and based my mileage on that. My 2014 F-150 ecoboost always reported 1-1.5l/100km better than actual. Actual was 12.8l/100km in the summer. Winter it went up to at least 13.8l/100km.
These numbers were without towing. Towing a 7000lb trailer, the Ford mileage was about 28l/100km.
Had 120000kms on that truck.

Sold the trailer and truck and got a 2017 tacoma. The Tacoma reports higher than actual by about .5l/100km.
I was getting 10.3l/100km before I put a raised cap on it. Now I'm getting 12.8l/100km. It's also winter driving now, so I'm not sure how much the cap effects my mileage. Only have 14000kms on it.

Wow, some of you really take this mileage thing seriously. I only know what mine is because my little screen display tells me.

Measuring every single drop and every single km for 174 fill-ups? Yikes.

In the city, approx 11.5 litres/100km on Mercedes Benz ML320 CDI Turbo Diesel

Drove to Vancouver one summer and played a game of drafting and got down to about 8 litres/100km

It was great when Diesel was selling at a big discount to gas in part of last year. Like 70 cents/litre compared to 100 cents/litre. Now the gap has closed in Winter.

Holy crap. I have a 2014 as well, but I am only at 24,000 km.

It is definitely possible that my truck is lying to me about mileage though. I'm not nearly dedicated enough to calculate it by hand (and I wouldn't do anything with the information anyways).
