I wonder what the GM who made a call is thinking now? If it comes out, does he think he would look good, in a sly fox way, by making a low-ball offer for a good player, or would he look bad by making an insulting offer to the hockey GM/agent circles?

Love it. This is the most passion exhibited by anyone in the organization all season. Need more of it.

It's probably not in the best interest of any GM to insult another. The whole job is about building positive relationships. Winning a trade is great, but having a reputation as a snake oil salesman is not. It's a fine line, but in general, I think GMs try to be fair with each other as you are more likely to deal with them again in the future if you think they can be trusted. I swear there are even times that when it turns out that one GM fleeces another, you will sometimes see the 2 make another minor deal at some point to help the other guy save face.
It's a small world and they never know who is going to be working for whom in the future.

True, but thats why Burke did this rather than Treliving, and he gave the GM the benefit of anonymity.
It was savage but discreet. I like it.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

Dumb GM. Check.
Insulting offer (or maybe a GM just WAAAAAAY overvaluing his players. Check.
Team needs a top 4 D. Check.
Tried to get Hamilton previously. Check.
Love the "insulting offer" part. Sets it straight to the other GMs that if they want to talk trade, they better have a serious offer. You should always hold your assets to the highest value, whether you believe in it or not.

This is exactly why you have Brian Burke on the payroll.
He is the definition of a beauty.
Exactly. Our GM probably listened patiently and then politely declined, he then likely told Burke what happened and what the offer was and they both had a hearty chuckle about it.
And then someone went and flapped their gums creating problems at which point Burke was designated as the appropriate agent of swift retribution in the form of this rather pointed repartee.

Oddly enough we discussed this very topic on our show last night, and our mutual response was the exact same as Burke's. If someone wants to be stupid and make you a ridiculous offer that is such a large overpayment that it's ridiculous, then sure you look at it. I mentioned something along the lines of Nylander, Connor Brown and Travis Dermott as an offer that would be ridiculous enough to meet the threshold of what you would need to go ahead with it and even then you probably still wouldn't. There are only a handful of players like Hamilton in the game. You want him, you're going to have to pay well more than market value, especially when he is only getting paid slightly more than Dennis Wideman and is a vastly superior player to Wideman (who himself is only slightly overpaid by about a million for what he brings) and he has further upside on top of that.
