They didn't change a lot, really. The guy can't play if he's injured or sent to the AHL. That doesn't mean fans can't still elect some 4th line guy to be an All Star captain. It just means anyone who wants to troll the vote has to do some research and pick a guy who won't get sent down before the ASG.
I couldn't possibly care less about the All Star game either way. You can watch more competitive hockey at your local arena on any given day.

On second thought, if the votebots really wanted to put the NHL in a hard spot with write-ins, vote for a rookie who is on a team at the cap. That way he earns his allstar game bonus which may eat into the teams cap for the following season. Suddenly I may want to vote for Puljarjvi.

This is actually a genius idea. I don't think it would actually have that effect, since I'm pretty sure the ASG bonus counts as cap hit until it's not achieved, but still.

there's an allstar break this year?? i thought that would have been yanked given that there was the worldcup this season.....
i hate the ASG. If it were up to me, this would simply be a team voted in by media/writers, and would be announced at the NHL awards.

I'd rather a journeyman rule which is one player like Scott gets voted in as respect not for how good he is, but his story.

Seems reasonable that NHL players should play in the NHL All-Star game. I guess that makes me un-fun.

doctajones428 logic: Combine hundreds of opinions on a huge message board into one so that it looks like everyone is hypocrites and inconsistent.
Not to mention, even the above opinion from one person isn't bad. One is supposed to be an actual tournament and was gimmicky and stupid, the other one is meaningless and gimmicky by design.

Hopefully fans find a way to exploit this rule and get some other 'low level' player in.

The NHL should stop calling the ridiculous exhibition that is performed at the ASG "hockey"..."Hockey" is a team sport of offense/defense/physicality/goaltending...two of these four elements are completely absent in the event, and have been for decades.
The ASG is simply a money printing event for the NHL, and in no way resembles "hockey". I wouldn't have even paid attention to last year's event, except for the drama surrounding Scott. And would rather see the "stars" of my team simply perform in the skills competition or, perhaps, get a slight, mid-season, break.
The BEST part of the ASG, in recent years, was the embarrassing of Bettman, with the Scott follies.

From http://thehockeywriters.com/performa...overages-2016/
Under the CBA, teams are allowed to exceed the salary cap during the season by 7.5 percent as a result of potential performance bonuses. The catch: if the team ends up exceeding the cap at year-end due to earned bonuses, the overage is carried over as a penalty the following season.

Maybe they're going about it all wrong. I think the best players should be involved in the skills competition because that actually compares skill and gives the fans something worth while. For the game maybe they should just do all rookies or something, make it an actual game worth watching. Maybe have the Stanley Cup champs play against a league all star team or something but as it is, the game is just broken.

This is the way it was done, prior to the first expansion...and THOSE games were competitive "Hockey."

For me, the attraction to the All-Star game has never been about the hockey. It's the personalities and stories that come up: John Scott, Nolan calling his goal, Carey Price goofing off in the skills competition, Voracek & Johnny, Hartnell's "suck it, Phaneuf", drunk Ovie, the draft, and so on.
If you're watching it for the on-ice product you're doing it wrong. Why people take so much umbrage with that is beyond me.
EDIT: Also, I should add that if the All-Star game is going to be directly in the middle of the season, and really means nothing other than being a fun event, keep it that way. The last thing I want is players from my team going all out in a meaningless contest with full on physicality.

Wouldn't they just get murdered?
Anyway, last year's games were actually a whole lot of fun. I don't see why they'd change it unless it becomes unwatchable again.

If we're going to vote in sub par players then maybe we should vote for guys who have had or are enduring some tough personal problems:
Stajan for his son. Bickel for his MS. Anderson/Moore for their wives. Setoguchi for his addiction, etc.

No, he probably has a bonus clause for an All Star Appearance.
