Since Smid was on our active roster at the start of the season, we already got the cap overage for him, right?

As for why the flames have not done it ? I have no idea. I see other teams also go this route , so there might be some sort of penalty/fine that goes along with being on LTIR. Granted i'm just guessing.

The Flames are under the cap, thus LTIR essentially does not exist. LTIR relief can only happen when you need to go over the cap with your replacement(s).

Way better people to explain than me, but I'll take a run at it
Smid's salary is currently being counted.
If placed on LTIR for cap purposes, the amount of relief you get is calculated from the amount you are over the day he is placed on it. Ideally, the Flames would like to be the full 3.5M over the cap to be granted the full amount of the contract above the cap. I'm not exactly sure how they would go about that.
I may have got this close to correct...

The Flames are under the cap by 8 thousand dollars...
I'm pretty damn sure they can put Smid on LTIR.

Putting Smid on LTIR does not give the Flames cap relief. It allows the Flames to exceed the cap by their cap amount + Smid's salary. Until such point as the Flames need to use that money putting Smid on LTIR doesn't really accomplish anything.

It doesn't matter if he is on LTIR or not, it means nothing until you need to exceed the cap. Being under by 8000 is still under.

If Versteeg going on IR I am torn; part of me wants to see a young guy from Stockton come in and see what he can do, but another small part of me wants to see what we have in Freddy Hamilton. I liked what I saw in the limited viewings last year when he was in the lineup. Will be interesting today once we hear the severity of Versteeg's injury

Maybe it's because he saw NHL time pretty young, but Freddie is still fairly young himself. He is older than Jankowski but he is the same age as guys like Bill Arnold and Kenny Agostino.

I might get torn a new one for suggesting this... But what about splitting Bennett and Brouwer?
Call up goes on 3rd line, Brouwer on 1st to try to jump start Johnny and Mony.

I'd split up Johnny and Mony first. Maybe put Gaudreau with Bennett and Brouwer. Let Monahan play on the 3rd line until he starts showing signs of life.

This probably won't be a popular post, but i think Mony is more than a "new right winger jump start" away from turning things around. I have a feeling this is going to be a long season for Mony. Not sure if it's all back injury related but he is playing like a 3rd line center and not a good one at that.
I would put Johnny with Bennet and Brouwer. Keep backlund line and Stajan line together. Put Mony with what is ever left over with sheltered ice minutes for a long while. I'm not even convinced Mony should be getting PP time right now.

You would be pretty damn wrong. You have to exceed the cap before it comes into play. As you stated, they are under the cap for now.

I like Freddie but think they should try someone with more talent. Hunter seems to be the obvious choice. Pribyl as well.

Right now #Flames not calling anyone up from Stockton for Versteeg. Heat play tonight vs San Diego at home.

How??!?! Kulak was actually good last night!
I mean I get the reasoning, Kings are big and slow, I just don't agree with the conclusion. At all.
