Makes sense since he was house hunting in NW Calgary last weekend. Maybe he's done? Or perhaps just buying a house for fun.

You could be the Mayor of Anaheim.

Mason Raymond is more successful in his line of work than probably any of us are in ours. The guy is a world class hockey player, played and put up points in the best league in the world. Hardly a loser...
I get it though, it's easy to lose perspective as a fan. The negativity gets old though.

The guy is a world class hockey player? What world stage has he played on against the best players in the world?

He's played in the WC, FWIW. But I think what was meant was that, by playing in the best league in the world, he meets that status.

There seems to be alot of guys in their late twenties / early thirties that have been forced into retirement due to salary cap and greater competition.
I wonder what they will do for the rest of their lives. Granted, they made alot of money, but it won't last forever.

If Mason Raymond can't figure out how to make MILLIONS of dollars last his whole life then he was always destined to struggle no matter which path he went down. Last year he made more money than most people do in their entire lives. He won't have to work another day in his life I imagine.

True, but I'm sure people who make less than $40K/yr could make similar claims about higher up people in O&G who were making well over $100K/yr for years, and then starting to struggle after a couple years of no work. I'd imagine one would get used to a certain lifestyle, and financial obligations made during living said lifestyle that still exist. Probably especially hard in an industry where you're retired before 35.
I get what you're saying though, one would hope in a cutthroat industry like that, that one would properly prepare for the very early adjustment to civilian life afterwards. I just mean it's probably hard for us regular schmoes to relate to.

He's played over 500 NHL games. Does anyone know how much pension he gets from the NHL should he decide to retire?

Troll much? Sorry, but you don't get drafted in the second round, play in this league for nearly a decade and bag 25 goals because you're a bum. Like many players, age and a severe injury caught up to him. He was never a top end player but he certainly had a number of seasons where he was an integral part of the team's success in Vancouver.

Yeah, he's world class in that he's better than the millions of other hockey players out there who haven't made the NHL.
He's painfully mediocre compared to his NHL peers though, but there is nothing wrong with that. You're not going to have 700 Crosbys in the NHL, and every tier of player in the NHL has a role.
His time has come and gone, just like thousands of other middling NHLers. Nothing to see here.

I think it's a smart move for the player and a decision I wonder why some don't make more often.
It appears his NHL career is probably done at this point and his AHL salary in his most recent contract was solid at $250k I believe. If he has a chance to go play in Europe in a great city, make a similar or even higher salary where the team pays the taxes, provides you with a car and an apartment, why would you stick around the AHL?
I know a lot of players have difficulty in letting the NHL dream go but for the players who know 100% they aren't NHL caliber and are going to be career minor leaguers, why stick around? Some of these AHL guys might make $125k if they have been in the league a few years and they are stuck in some awful towns. If you can make $200k in Bern, Switzerland or Prague, Czech Republic as an example and get all the benefits, doesn't this make more sense?? The women alone in a lot of these countries would be enough for me to give up the AHL in a heart beat!

According to the Ducks press release, Raymond didn't report to the AHL for family reasons.
There is the grounds to terminate the contract.
