I wouldn't even put Johnson in against Vancouver. Let Elliott play back to back. Get the rust off. Let him get comfortable.

He is doing none of that.

Full disclosure: I really really like the guy, and I am not starting a "I hate Ferland" thread.
Absolutely, I fully agree. No one is expecting playoff intensity, but do some of the things that made him successful, and stick in the lineup. He's supposed to be a typical power forward pest who stands in front of the net and goes to the dirty areas to make plays, plus a hit now and again. He was borderline invisible last night, at least to me. Looks like I'm not alone.

I'd ice 7 d-men if I was Gulutzan.

Giordano-Brodie
Jokipakka-Hamlton
Kulak-Engelland
Wideman

Then use Wideman on the second PP unit and give him sheltered minutes otherwise.

Saturday against Vancouver I like to see:

Gaudreau - Monahan- Versteeg
Stajan - Bennett- Brouwer
Bouma - Backlund- Frolik
Ferland- Hamilton- Chiasson

Stajan is getting old for 4th line C, but I think he will play well as LW.

I didn't see anything in Tkatchuk's play that indicates he should sit. I don't disagree that Stajan could be a better winger. Perhaps on the third line though.

I like Tkatchuk, but it is back to back game and may be he needs to see the game above and get some learning.

Me either, I'd even say Tkachuk looked better than Bennett last night.

I'd like to see this

Gaudreau - Monahan - Versteeg
Tkachuk - Bennett - Brouwer
Stajan - Backlund - Frolik
Ferland - Bouma - Chiasson

I worry that Ferland is on tenuous ground with concussions and is shying away from physical contact so that he doesn't get his bell rung. Which makes him kinda useless.
Hate to say it, but we should consider trading him while he has value.

Re Ferland. I think Hartley reined him in after the Vancouver series and to start last year really dialled him back in hopes that he could fill a skill role in the top 6. I just hope it didn't ruin him because the guy could be a real force banging some bodies on the bottom 6 and making life difficult for opponents in the corners and slot. He has to be reminded that he isn't top 6 and that the road to a paycheque in the NHL for him is the rough, bone rattling, off the grid one.

Re: Ferland I think all you guys are wrong and he didn't even have a bad game yesterday, he was hardly the only Flames winger to be invisible at 5-on-5. The best our wingers played were on special teams. It was one game and over a full season you are going to have games where depth guys aren't hitting everything that moves and games where they are. The Oilers contrary to popular belief.. defended and moved the puck well up and down their lineup and didn't leave a lot of blatant openings for bone crushing hits.

Ferland - Backlund - Frolik = Micheal - Mikael - Michael

*Mind blown*

Yah, he came in and said something along the lines of, it was all my fault, I vouched for Grossman, he played bad, I should have pulled Elliot but didn't have the guts, and I messed around with the D combo's in very unadvised ways. It's on me folks, sorry to the city of Calgary.

One regular season game and he needs to lean from above? I thought he was one of the most involved players last night. Let the kid play and continue to gain confidence while using video/coaching to help him get better.

Ferland was a disappointment yesterday. I'm not for him not being the wrecking ball he was during the canuck series, but heck, gaudreau took the body on the forecheck, every player was finishing their checks. Ferland had a clear shot to hit russel behind the oilers net in the second half of hte game (can't recall which period) and just turned around.

Look, i was putting in my vote for ferland to be given a shot on the top line to start the season, and i still think there will be time for that should versteeg not work for whatever reason. But the guy needs to be making himself an option by showing the staff that he is effective at something/anything. I hated his game last nite, didn't do anything useful wtih the puck, in fact, had a pretty ugly giveaway at the oilers blueline that went the other way quickly.

on a bit of a side note, i know everyone's saying he can't be the guy he was in the canucks series, or doesn't need to be. I too was in that camp, however, at some stage if ferland doesn't show anything offensively, then he sure as hell better be able to play the way he did in that series if he wants to stay in the NHL. I dont' mean a fighter, i mean a guy who can get energy line type mintues, get in on the forecheck, apply some hits, and ensure they are involved in the post-whistle stuff, being a thorn for the other team.

If he doesn't offensive potential isn't met, then he's gotta take the Chris Neil approach (guy was pretty awesome in the first period of the leafs game that i was able to catch). He's got the speed, the size, to do that, and chip in should an opportunity to make a play be on his stick.

His effort was pretty piss poor yesterday. Despite the flames not performing well, i would definitely not pin it on a lack of effort or try from most of the players on the team, unfortunately, ferland would be one of the exceptions to that.

one more point: Not to get overly nostalgic or emotionally dramatic, but it's the frigin BOA. Every player should have an added edge playing the team's biggest rival. If a guy like ferland can't be saltier and nastier in games like this, especially when momentum was predominantly in the oppositions favour, then what the hell man.

What are you asking about last season. Are you implying he was not making hits last season?

2015-16
Ferland - 3.47 hits per 15 minutes
Wingels - 2.38 hits per 15 minutes
Lucic - 2.62 hits per 15 minutes
Brown - 2.56 hits per 15 minutes
Backes - 2.36 hits per 15 minutes
Brouwer - 2.15 hits per 15 minutes
