It seems like every time I see a car with a lightbulb out, it's a VAG product, so I'm still a bit skeptical they've gotten better in this regard.

The Mark IV VWs had their fair share of issues, the newer ones are a pretty solid vehicle and fun to drive. They have really improved their electrical concerns.

It's a VW, burnt out lights and electrical problems are normal.

And the silly thing is. I've been working for VW for 17 years, had 17 cars over those years, and had 1 with electrical issues. One of the first Mark 5 GTI's built for North America. The vin ended in like 000036 or something ridiculous.
In the 90's our cars were ass. Mark 4's were quite a bit better, but since mark 5 we have been no different than anyone else. (I'll put in a caveat for B5 Passat and early Touareg though.)

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, have you ever seen a 80's-90's era VW where all the door handles worked? I don't think I ever got in one of those that didn't have at least one busted or wonky.

As a matter of fact, yes! I used to own a '96 Jetta, it was my first car and really started my fandom of the brand. I had that thing for 7 years, never once did my door locks give me an issue. The funny this is though, my parents had a '91 Passat at the time and my keys could unlock and start their vehicle, as well as the other way around.

Maybe it's a GTI/Golf R thing then...lol.
I'll be blunt. The "VW's have ELECTRICAL ISSUES!!!1!1!1!!" crowd, are the same people that come in, and open the trunk of a Beetle looking for the engine. It's an old resolved issue, and old issues plague a lot of manufacturers.
I have a freind in a Hyundai store, and they are still having to make excuses for the Pony.... a car built 30+ years ago. "OH well my neighbour had a Pony, and it was a piece of crap! These must be crap!" When in reality, Hyundai now makes a better car than Honda IMO.

Not a VW question, but a little more general: I got a tire shop to put on a set of Goodyear Ultragrip winter tires on the stock wheels of my Civic last week, and is it just the tires not being top of the line that makes the handling feel funny at highway speeds? When I turn the wheel at highway speeds, it feels like the car has a delay in responding, kind of like it's on a slippery road. You don't notice it at lower speeds. Could it be another issue with how the tires were mounted on the wheels?
If I just got tires that are loose on handling, then that's fine, I'll get used to it - I just want to know if this is something I should look further in to.
Thanks!

Are they different sized tires than you had on before? That certainly can affect steering response.

Sweet thread. Do mechanics have any concerns regarding Haldex-5 since the BorgWarner merger? Every BW turbo I've ever had failed, I don't have much faith in that company.
And, also, why doesn't VW ever bring anything good over? I would bleed to get my hands on a GTD or a Sportwagen R. It's a crime for an Alltrack to have 170hp.

Do they have to watch what people will pay for a VW? You load up a VW and you're very close to an Audi all of a sudden. I think they try to keep a distinct line between the two brands in NA.

Hate BorgWarner? Hate 170hp?
I have just the solution for you.

People who buy A3's over R's/GTi's?
Let Audi make that money for an inferior car.

I'm sure I will get slammed for this (who goes to the dealer for a bulb) but when I get a bulb warning, I usually just go to the dealer, because they will do it for me, and it doesn't cost more than a few dollars - so that's where my bulbs are from.

That's smart on your part, we have proper parts in stock. Something as small as bulbs can cost you more in the long run due to incorrect wattage on bulbs leading mechanics astray when diagnosing.
