The Flames have some really nice building blocks. But current age and contract situation isn't comparable to what the Blackhawks had at the beginning and throughout their dynasty. Not only that but as players came out they were able to draft well and fill the holes through veteran discounts through free agency.

For example we have Frolik and Brouwer each making $4M plus. Those types of guys were Blackhawks only when they were making peanuts.

The comparisons wont work. But we have a shot to be a real dangerous playoff team this year. Lets be happy with that and worry about the Blackhawks comparisons after a cup or two.

On one hand I think we have to remember that Hartley was not all bad as the 14/15 season was the most fun season since 2004. However it's pretty obvious that there were issues behind the scenes as Brouwer wasn't a part of last year's team and this quote is likely based on speaking with players and/or other people within the organization.

Exactly. One has to wonder just how in the hell he got that team into round 2 with Dennis Wideman and Kris Russell as his top d-men.

You're also correct in stating Brouwer has no idea what it's like to play for Hartley. I patiently await the "Gulutzan is just undoing all Hartley's bad habits" retort if the Flames limp out of the gates this season anyway.

Well I for one don't believe the Flames can afford another slow start. Part of the reason for success in 14/15 was that the team got off to a good start. Annual slow are a habit that is partially responsible for the dearth of playoff teams over the last 7 years.
