Is Wotherspoon ready? I would say he is. Kulak maybe. Kylington, Hickey, and Andersson? Those are some really young guys especially for D.

I wont be devastated if we dont sign Nak, yet I do think it would be a good signing. Allows us low cost options.

Nak played well for us. Did not look out of place at the NHL level. Not looking out of place in the World Cup of hockey. A 5 6 dman that plays in the World cup of Hockey makes my team easily as a 5 6 dman.

I'm not saying I have an issue with Nakladal. I'm saying there's no spot for him. There wasn't any last year either. Sure, when Smid, Engelland and Wideman come off the books there's room for him and others, but as it stands right now there isn't

I can't imagine these guys like their chances if the blueline has no openings. There's already Giordano, Brodie, Hamilton, Wideman, Jokipakka, and Engelland, as well as the question mark in Smid, who will likely want one more crack at it. The only way I would support signing Nakladal is if Wideman was traded, Smid is on LTIR, or management were willing to bury a high priced defenseman such as Wideman, Smid or Engelland

Does that expose them (your list of younger players) to the expansion draft? I can imagine teams trying to have d men that are under the radar for expansion losses like Kevin. Hiding near future NHL guys in the minors for one more year might be a strategy a lot to young players will have to live with this year

Plenty of room for him.

First, there's injuries.

Then, you have Smid, Wideman and possibly Engelland all gone after this season, if not sooner.

Also, I have no doubt that Nakladal would be agreeable to playing in Stockton until such time as one of those guys gets moved (or there's an injury)

AHL seasons count as pro-seasons for expansion elligiable players so all but Anderson would be unprotected anyways but every team has these players

I would be willing to bet there is an internal mandate (from Burke or Edwards) wherein Brad can't sign/extend/trade anyone until Johnny is signed.

Perhaps Johnny is the sole concern in signing at this point, but I'd be willing to bet there is no mandate from anyone saying no trades.
If someone called up Treliving and asked about Wideman, no one in the Flames organization is telling Brad to hang up.
Trading a veteran with a bigger cap hit right now would be extremely advantageous to re-signing Johnny as it gives them a little more flexibility.

What in recent history has shown that anything like that would be happening? Brad's done an incredible job of building this team, why all of a sudden would his boss and an owner come in and say "Hey Brad, we just decided we don't trust you can handle managing the cap and Gaudreau's contract so here's some rules we're putting in place".

Jakub Nakladal is still clinging to the hope he can re-sign with the Calgary Flames.

And as a top-pairing defenceman on the Czech Republic squad, he’s hoping to use the World Cup as another audition of sorts.

The 28-year-old defenceman said the hang-up appears to be the Flames’ hesitation to ink him to a one-way contract, guaranteeing him NHL money.

“I would like to stay in Calgary, but I said after the season, I will soon be 29 and I have one kid and my wife is pregnant, so I think more about my family right now,” said Nakladal, who was called up in the second half of last season from Stockton to play his first 27 NHL games for the Flames.

“So, a one-way contract for me is the only option for me in the NHL.”

Otherwise, he’d likely head back to Europe.

The way I read that is more about stability in location than money. He wants to find a team where he can live with his family rather than moving up and down through the year.

Not to mention that if he was in the AHL without a 1 way contract he wouldn't likely be making a six figure income.

If he's in the AHL, he's probably making less than $70k.

May as well play in Europe if he can't snag a 1-way deal with an NHL club.

Having said that, I hope by some miracle he stays with the Flames.
