The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to undercoverbrother For This Useful Post:
I just want to chime in and say that if shooting a gun and firing a bow and arrow are olympic sports, then darts should be an olympic sport, along with firing a crossbow, throwing a boomerang, whipping a slingshot, tossing a throwing star, and any other projectile you can imagine. Hell, even javelin, shot put, and discus should be thrown into that group as well while we're at it.
Javelin and discus are olympic sports (Javelin and discus are among the legacy sports, which is a perfectly adequate reason for having them.)
Other than that, I don't think this argument makes much sense. It's like saying that if one team sport where you try to get a ball into the goal should be in, then all of them should be. It's silly.
Shooting is a super popular and common hobby and one of the sports that actually resembles an everyday activity. Competitive archery is an age-old sport, probably as old as bows, and has plenty of hobbyists all around the world. I vastly prefer stuff like this over super-artificial marginal sports like polevault.
For me there should be three basic criteria for a sport to be an olympic sport:
- Popularity and worldwide coverage (badminton is globally a huge sport btw)
- Tradition (wrestling, javelin, archery etc.)
- Basic/common human activity (short/long distance running, short/long distance swimming, long/high jump, sailing, cycling...)
Judo, taekwondo, boxing and wrestling are among the most popular martial arts, and martial arts are very popular sports/hobbies, so I don't have a problem having them represented. Karate I believe will be added for the 2020 olympics. MMA is a popularly TV sport, but the number of actual MMA athletes isn't that high.
Gymnastics I agree is kind of a dubious as a sport, but it's also among the most popular solo sports in the world and gets great ratings so pretty easy to see why it's there.

Gymnastics is a "dubious sport". They are athletes, they actually strive to attain the motto Citius - Altius - Fortius.
Shooting, is a skill, you don't require the same level of physical ability to shoot as you do pummel pommel horse.
