Why? He's just been bought out, and other guys like him are struggling to even get a contract. He shouldn't command more than a million, methinks.

Anton Volchenkov. Pretty easy to see why you would confuse him with Antoine Vermette.

I think this move is a very creative way to make a trade and retain more than 50% salary. There may be a team that wants vermette but is cap stressed and can't afford 1/2 the salary retention. So Arizona buys him out making him ufa and he signs a sweetheart deal with a team who in turn makes a 'trade' with Arizona to reward them for eating the money. Will be very interesting to see where he lands as this is a very puzzling move that has many media types scratching their heads. Has to be more than meets the eye.

He isn't a player that helps you win. No point in acquiring

If we just had one less Stajan/Bollig on the roster I'd pick him up right away.

Theory might have worked if he didn't agree to be waived...

He didn't agree. His NMC had expired.

More money in dead-cap space to get the Dogs to the Sal-floor...odd move, though.

Anybody ever figure out why a money strapped franchise bought Vermette out? Were the advanced stats used by the new GM not flattering?
Okay I guess they are going to save $1.25M but that seems not worth it to me.

Maybe they thought they could pick up Vrbata at $1.25 and they would net out even. Imagine that if they strike out with Vrbata, can see coyotes active in the pto market. They have the flexibility to do this with vermette off the books.

Just would like to comment that the only way the Flames could get rid of Wideman is by buying out his contract if they still have the opportunity. I do not believe there is an NHL team who would take Wideman even with the Flames eating 1/2 his salary. He is just too slow and does not have sufficient agility to be a successful NHL defenseman with any team.

This thread is about Vermette, not Wideman. What's the point of bringing him into this discussion?

Yeah it was so long ago that he scored 56pts in the NHL there has actually been one entire season since that happened.
No point in buying out Wideman the team has no cap issues and he is an expiring contract

The only reason they would buy him out is if they are that motivated not to have him around. Seems like seems are strained after everything that happened last season.

Then why wouldn't have they just bought him out in June? An August buyout doesn't fit that, my guess is they are looking to bring someone else in.
