Is this the star player list or the "untouchable" list? Seems like the same thing
I would argue the Flames have one star player in Gaudreau. Other than that I believe Monohan, Brodie and Bennett do have potential to become stars, but do not and have not done enough to make the Flames a serious threat.
Giordano no. Unfortunately. Even though he's a good defenseman and captain.

One star player. That is all.

Giordano at his current status is definitely a star. He's been in Norris discussion the past few seasons and his point production over the past few seasons is only beat by a few marquee defenseman.
Gaudreau is a star, no question.
Monahan is not quite there. He's on the border of star status.
Brodie is just underrated. He's the best player on the team IMO and should be a star to anyone who knows hockey.

They deliver impressive totals year in, year out, are explosive & exciting, and are key to their teams' success. I hesitate a bit on Weber & Getzlaf, though due to some blips in their offensive output.
Star (too many to mention) - Benn, Seguin (besides playing for the Stars), Perry, Giroux, Subban, Kopitar, Tarasenko, Hedman, Holtby, Burns, Letang, Pacioretty, Josi, Pavelski, Pietrangelo, Byfuglien, Bergeron... I'm sure I'm forgetting some absolute defensive stalwarts a la Bob Gainey, too.
Rising stars - guys like Johanssen, MacKinnon, Klingberg, Martin Jones, Forsberg, Ekblad, M. Murray, S. Jones...
Then there a bunch of excellent players who don't quite put up the totals or may lack the dynamism of the stars. I'll just put Wayne Simmonds as the poster boy for this category since it's so subjective.
Gaudreau is either a rising star or an established star. I don't much care which. He could even vault into superstar status if he records even better numbers and/or delivers in the playoffs. Gio belongs in the conversation with the star players above.

Benn is a super star.

What constitutes a bonafide #1 in your eyes?
I mean, Monahan's a 30-goal, 60-point scorer. He's pretty good defensively, and he's great at faceoffs.
In my eyes, he's certainly a #1 centre.

I really dont think he is that great defensivly right now. And when you watch him he doesnt drive the play like Gaudreau does. Be honest without Gaudreau on his line do you think he could drive a line like a #1 centre?
Here is my list of #1 centres
Crosby
Malkin
Backstrom
Giroux
Mcdavid
Getzlaf
kopitar
tavares
thornton
bergeron
toews
and potentially H sedin.

That list is missing a ton of people. I mean, if you have Sedin...
Stamkos
Seguin
Eichel
Johnson
Kuznetsov
Pavelski
Barkov
Spezza?
Duchene?
Stastny?
Johansen?
Monahan?

Monahan is a 70+ point player next year and for the foreseeable future, IMO. He'll blossom into a premier two-way centre in this league. He's no superstar, but he's definitely a prodigal Sun.
|
We're awarding someone star status for future accomplishments that may or may not happen? Okay then...
We have one legitimate star on this team and that's Johnny. He's a polarizing player whose skill is widely recognized across the league by fans and is someone that would sell tickets by himself regardless of what team he played for. In Calgary we know how special and necessary Gio, Brodie, and Monahan are to this team's success moving forward, but they are not league-wide stars.

"People" can say that, because your narrow view of what constitutes a #1 Centre isn't gospel.
He is a #1 Centre on Calgary, and was the #15 scoring Centre in the NHL at 22 years old. He's also been praised as one of the better Centres in the western conference by the likes of Darryl Sutter etc.
It's fine suggesting he isn't yet a star, but he's definitely in the conversation at a very early stage in his career.

Monahan realy doesn't get the credit he deserves on that line. In my opinion he's just as important to Gaudreau's success as Gaudreau is to Monahan's.

Here's my list of Flames stars, not the rest of the league's list. Are we going to let Toronto decide who our stars are?
Gaudreau
Monahan
Giordano
Brodie
Honourable mention to Hamilton, Backlund and Bennett.

I think Monahan is just as effective at driving the play as is Gaudreau. He plays a very different style of game, which contributes greatly to how dramatically he is being under-rated in this thread. And yes, I honestly believe that he would have no problem producing around his current rate with or without Gaudreau.
It is borderline nonsense for people to insist that Monahan is a "good second line centre." The kid ranked in the 95th percentile of production among all designated centres to play in the NHL last year, and he was one of only three players in the top-thirty at his position under the age of 22-years-old.
