Stanley’s original Cup from 1892, known as the “Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup" (above), was awarded until 1970, and is now on display in the Vault Room at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

In 1963, NHL president Clarence Campbell believed that the original Cup had become too brittle to give to championship teams, so the “Presentation Cup” was created and is the well-known trophy awarded today. (Skeptics can authenticate the Presentation Cup by noting the Hockey Hall of Fame seal on the bottom.)
The final Cup is a replica of the Presentation Cup, which was created in 1993 by Montreal silversmith Louise St. Jacques and is used as a stand-in at the Hall of Fame when the Presentation Cup isn’t available.

Whats cool about the "original" is the vault room cup has the bowl attached to its wooden base with medal team name plates attached to the wood base. On those team plates are players names scratched in and on the wood as well.

Thats what started the tradition of the extra rings and eventually players and staff names eventually engraved.

If someone wants to pm me witg how to imbed, i'll throw up some close ups of her. But im sure some can be fou.d online somewhere as well.

As for the topic. Superstitions are silly, ergo fun. Sport and especially Hockey is meant to be fun. So if im in a place that i find more beautiful than the holy Sistine Chapel, then im going to endulge in those superstitions and silliness.

Most beautiful and thats why the hardest trophy to win in sports today.

The one that travels is the one that the players are presented. There is no "fake" one.

There's the original bowl, which was retired because it was too brittle. It's permanently at the HHOF.

There's the Presentation Cup, which is the one that Bettman hands out on the ice and the players celebrate with during the summer. If you've ever seen the Cup outside of the HHOF, this is the one you've seen.

There's also the Replica Cup, which is the one that's on display at the HHOF when the Presentation Cup is travelling somewhere. If the Presentation Cup is at the HHOF, it's the one that's on display, otherwise, the Replica Cup is there.

The way to tell the difference is to look for the errors on the Cup. The errors are not fixed on the Presentation Cup, but the Replica Cup has no errors on it. The most obvious error to look for is all the X's over Peter Pocklington's father's name on the 1984 Oilers' engraving.

If you never have, been or will ever play in the NHL, I don't see any problem touching the Cup

I think it is more a player thing not touching the cup than for fans.
I know for me the 3 times I have been around the cup. Once wearing a Orr jersey at the Orr Museum they had the cup there for the weekend. I did the famous Bobby Orr resting his arms on the cup pose. The second our family all had our hands on the bowl.
3rd time just standing beside it.
I wouldn't hoist over my head though. Just wouldn't feel worthy of that one thing.
I think it is far different if you were with personal friend that won it like BC Chris and he said go ahead man pick it up etc. That's totally different you are truly celebrating the cup amongst friends. Nothing wrong with his photos. Glad he shared them here.

If I was a player I may take part in the superstition.

But for fans I like to think if your team has won it, then it's just like you won it so then you are allowed to touch it.

So that means for all of us who were fans in 89 are free and clear to touch it, no harm no foul.

I've kissed the flames part of the cup 3 times. Maybe even a little tongue on one occasion hehheh.

What's the etiquette if there's two girls with the one cup?

Don't really have a problem with fans lifting/touching/drinking from the cup. That's something I'd assume 100% of hockey fans have dreamed of doing themselves since they were kids. Nothing's wrong with living out a dream, especially when you'll likely never get that opportunity again.

I think it's nice to have some things that are "sacred". I wouldn't ever lift the cup, or, drink out of it. I would consider that to be disrespectful. I have touched it before, while taking a picture, where Selanne's name was engraved.

I wouldn't get mad at someone else tho for not sharing my silly views of the Cup.

I won the cup in a street hockey game. I drank unlimited beers out of it, rye and coke out of it. My buddies wife sat in it. Would do it all again in a heart beat.

So did they move the extra rings put on the original cup pre 1970 to the Presentation Cup?
