I'd just like to point out in the real world, East Van, lesbians don't look a damn thing like they do in porn movies, much to most straight guys disappointment.

That would also be the case in every other city and country Ive visited...although I cant honestly say I have specifically looked for lesbians. Geez...this just sounds wrong on all points...

So couldn't the point have been made more articulately then?

They could have left out everything about lesbians being "hot" and still conveyed the message about the harsh lives the LGBTQ community faces in those countries without coming across so juvenile in the attempt.

Even then, it still seems as crass as when the PCs went "LGBTories" not long ago. These people don't care about the plight of the community, they just want to promote their own cause, justifying it by telling everybody how horrible the other oil producing nations treat LGBTQs.

This is a marvel of graphic design. I particularly appreciate the suggestively placed double-ended arrows, and the ominous placement of the thumb.

Just because women/lesbians in those countries face absolute atrocities--it doesn't mean we're the bastion of female equality and LGBT rights here in good old North America either. And we're supposed to be more advanced--thus we should hold ourselves to a higher standard than "well hey at least we're not stoning people."

Just for a little backstory on this message, as it's a little more serious within Canada (not arguing it isn't horribly done) for those who may not know the politics here.

Our province is blackballed by the US government due to protectionist, American Oil funded environmental campaigns. But amazingly enough, it actually extends into our own country, where provinces will quite literally choose oil from backwards, horrible human rights abusing countries over oil from within their own damn country that would actually make our country's economy stronger, because they're too stupid to do any research and just give in to the American hype of the dirty Alberta Oilsands.

It's actually unbelievable how bad this has gotten, with most of North American just buying into this because of Americas fight against Alberta to keep their own economy afloat. Just baffling.

It targets the wrong demographic, that's the problem with the ad. We know that Canadian oil workers presumably like hot lesbians, but they already support the Oil Sands!
The ad should have shown two geese kissing, now that would have gotten many, many likes on Faceplace.

I think it just misses the mark entirely. The point isn't, "lesbians are hot! We like lesbians! Buy our oil!" so much as "the money you send elsewhere strengthens regimes who use that power to murder people for who they love"...
But hey, I guess this one got attention, which is the point of an awareness campaign.

It's interesting to me that people see this as objectifying lesbians (which it does) but a typical Carl's Jr ad barely registers on the radar. Or every single girl magazine I've ever seen on a shelf.
"HOW TO LOSE 10 LBS BY THE WEEKEND SO YOU DON'T LOOK LIKE YOU ANYMORE!!!"

FYI- Carl's Jr ads are just girls in bikinis sensually eating a burger.

I suffered an attack from lesbians in East Van. I can attest that the attackers did not look like anything you see on the internet.

I was stuck in traffic along E 1st Ave trying to get to downtown with some buddies. I was in the front passenger seat with the windows and sunroof open. I can't even remember what it was at this point, but something funny happened in the car and I started laughing really loud. I made the grave mistake of making eye contact with the lesbian couple on the side walk as I was laughing (and so were my buddies).

They assumed I was laughing at them for their eccentric appearance and/or being homophobic, so they threw their cherry pies at our car and a good chunk of it sprayed us too (windows were open). Wow was I pissed off, but after a fleeting second where I wanted to get out of the car and slam their heads together, we drove off after a few f-bombs and other pleasantries.

Anyway, carry on with the thread.

I'd like to attest to this, I went to a Lesbian wedding a few years back, and while it was one of the more fun weddings I've attended and the reception party was a blast, I can honestly say it was not nearly as hot as I envisioned.

I actually think this would be less of a 'controversy' if it was an ad in Europe.
Here in North American culture, porn/nudity/sexuality is more taboo it seems.

I love the SJW stance of having a right to free speech and a right to be offended.
You know who doesn't have a right to free speech? Women in Saudia Arabia. Yet you take offense to a lighthearted yet tacky advertisement that is at least trying to spread some awareness about an actual issue.

I swear society is slowly being ruined by these SJW's who have all the time in the world to talk about the worlds smallest problems.

It is curious how European countries that are more progressive and tolerant than North America in every meaningful way are far less uptight about language and imagery. I suspect it's something to do with the way tolerance came about in Europe more organically, while in North America it is championed by academics who have crawled deep up their own dogmatic bungholes. Also, North America has a much stronger puritanical streak. We love to be shocked and offended, and wag our fingers at the offenders.
