Pretty slimy tactic by Matthews' agent to leak this.

Where did it say his agent leaked this?

The author of the article says things like "an NHL source not involved in the talks told The Star" and "said an executive with a rival club" tells me it could be complete BS as much as any type of leak.

Pretty ridiculous by the Leafs considering they are rolling in cash with plenty of cap room.

This is how contract negotiations should have gone:

Matthew's agent: My client requests the maximum rookie contract.

Lou: Sign here.

Lou doesn't believe in individual bonuses. He thinks a player should be playing a "team game" and not trying to pad individual stats to hit a bonus. It has nothing to do with them saving money.

I'm sure Matthews will sign the max in the next week or two. If this drags on into mid-August then I will be worried.

Lou also completely hates when a kid acts "entitled" so it could be just a tactic to ground the kid a little... get him in team mode.

People are using words like "old" and "dinosaur" when talking about Lou,but having met the man and listening to him talk with 11 others at a table I can honestly say he's one of the most brilliant(and very funny) person I ever met.

Lou has no leverage. One Gm's personal opinion/belief does not dictate a market. If I were Matthew's agent I know what I'd say. Bring up a contract that's in line with the market or piss off.

Burke doesn't believe in jersey numbers over 30 for established players. But he learned quickly that a stupid rule is a stupid rule.

I really, really hope Matthews just decides to head back to Zurich. Just completely screw over the Leafs.

Matthews might be wishing he went the major junior route to make it only a 2 year period before re-entering the draft vs 4 years for a European player or even this defected player status. what is that.

You have to think Shanahan will overrule before this gets out of hand.

Really, Lou's losing this game of chicken. Matthews basically threatens to go back to Zurich or the KHL for a year, and Leafs nation will want Lou fired immediately.

And other than Yak, they sign their 1st overalls so fast that it seems they have a boiler plate contract form preprinted in the mail room ready to go.

What if Matthews demands a trade? I bet this would get resolved quickly then.

He is entitled to what he's asking for. He's a first overall pick and deserves a similar contract to that of other first overall picks. Supply and Demand.

If anyone is acting entitled it's Lou, thinking his personal view is what everyone has to follow. It's like needing to pay back debt so you try to sell a house for a million despite the market clearly saying that the house is worth 500K. Too ####ing bad.

I really hope Matthews holds out.

The Leafs announced today that they've signed forward Auston Matthews to a three-year entry-level contract. #TMLtalk

I don't know. He made some decent coin last year. If it ever came to him not suiting up and heading back to Europe, he would still be making some decent coin. Imagine how much the KHL would throw at him to help the London franchise. You are right though, this is a first overall pick we are talking about here, Shanahan won't let the franchise piss away a player like Matthews and will step in if he has to.
