We'll see if he Mona-can give the Flames a Mona-hand and accept a hometown discount to return for an 8-year Mona-span. He's really the Mona-man.

I agree with some of the less optimistic posts in this thread.
IMO I think these deals have become complex, personal, and challenging to strike. Hopefully no impasse but at some point it has to I would think.
And the longer the situation goes on, does someone budge or is a bridge burned? I think Johnny is a lock - but I'm beginning to wonder about the Monahan contract...

It's July...
If he's not signed by September then I'll start worrying.

Pay your players market value. I don't personally believe Stamkos took a discount exactly. He decided that he was happier with what TB was offering and playing for that team, than earning more somewhere else. Yzerman offered him exactly what he thought he was worth to that team. I suspect that is exactly what BT is doing.

There is no salary cap for scouting and development. Not a good analogy. Players understand that if they take a little less, there will be more left over to sign good players who will help the team win.

This is just a good team player in a Canadian market saying good team player Canadian market things.

Shouldn't the agent do what the player wishes? The agent can try to persuade the player that he is asking for too much or not enough, but in the end the agent doesn't have the final say, the player does.

Disagree. You think the Flames have infinite resources outside of the salary cap? There is certainly a budget for hockey operations outside of player payroll and money saved in one area can be spent somewhere else, or just pocketed by the owners. Not so different than a salary cap.
I would not ask one of our employees to take less money so we could spend more on someone else.

It will certainly be interesting if the term is the full 8. It'll likely be a bit steep up-front and then be fair to excellent value for the rest of the term.

NHLPA indirectly has the final say to some extent. They aren't too happy when players take less than they should be getting. Doubt an agent wants to piss them off.
