Probably the Berlin Wall falling. I remember watching the news with my parents, at the time I was only 8 so I didn't really get what it meant but it seemed like a really big deal and it was.
The others I remember watching was the OJ chase and Princess Diana dying. Those two were the biggest I can remember.

I think the breakup of Yugoslavia and the subsequent war, and the Rwandan Genocide were the first ones that really stuck with me.

There's a few.
Challenger for sure, and of course all the ensuing terrible jokes our young minds thought were hilarious.
Baby Jessica? The baby that fell down the well? Going off the top of my head but I think that was her name. Remember following it on news.
Mt. St. Helen's of course.
Terry Fox too but I was a little older for Steve Fonyo so have a better recollection of that.
84 Olympics. My cousin won silver in the individual road race (cycling).
Ben Johnson winning in record fashion and subsequent downfall.
Lots of stuff off the top of my head.

Before reading this thread, the first thing I thought of was Alan Legere. I grew up in NB and was 10 during his "Reign of Terror". A serial killer escaping from the local hospital and being on the loose for 7 months was one of the earliest news memories I can recall.
My dad was always watching the news. I remember George Bush being elected. This thread reminded me of watching the Baby Jessica news as well.

Star Wars in 1977 is vivid in my memory as well. Saw it 3 times at the Capilano theatre in Edmonton.

The first big news story I can remember as a young kid was the first Gulf War. I remember it all over thew news then with all of the printed infographics that showed the flight paths that the new F-117 stealth bombers took to bomb various cities.
Didn't really know what everything meant at the time but there were explosions and cool planes and that was enough to captivate me as a young kid (was six or seven at the time). They also started selling desert storm collector cards right next to the hockey cards at the stores and I remember getting my first Mario Lemieux upper deck card the same time I got the M1A1 Abrams.
Probably remembered it because I had just watched Top Gun a couple of months prior to the war happening.

So is this the 'old balls' thread now?
I think its OJ chase or Princess Diana for me.

I was working at radio/TV station at the time of Diana's death so it was a pretty big deal. I still remember a group of us sitting around at friends house eating/drinking and two of the TV reporters and one radio guy sprinting off to work once we saw the news on CNN or something.
And yes, old balls for sure.

The first I really remember was when Korean Air flight 007 was shot down. I was convinced as a kid it was going to start World War III and spent pretty much the whole day in the basement, when my parents asked me to go to 7-11 to get some milk I ran there and back as fast as I could so I could get back in the basement.

Rodney King verdict and the LA riots. I was 10. And then definitely OJ. He ruined my summer TV watching as the trial was on KTLA and I was always upset it would preempt my Saved By the Bell reruns.

Princess Diana and Mother Theresa dying stick out a lot but I was already a little older then... like 8? Can't really remember any big news events before that.
