There is always a choice. The sheer amount of charities available to them, and the social safety net each individual gets based on the tax we all pay. It's their choice to blow the safety net on drugs or booze and forego a home living on the streets. I don't really care the reason whether it's mental or an addiction, the programs, beds, and places are all there for them to use. Anyways, what Sean Avery did is embarrassing. That's the real reason we're commenting on this story.
Apparently you don't consider mental illness a real illness?
I also love the "anyways.... I am going to shut this topic down and not derail the thread at the end of my long post about my opinion"
Seems to have the mental capacity (and always has) of about a 15 year old boy. Doesn't excuse the behavior, but wouldn't be shocked if he has actual diagnosible mental disorder or issues.
... I'm really curious, and I want to ask you what the heck you're talking about, but I'm afraid that it's a trap.

Walk out of Waterfront Station and see how much harassment you get for smokes, booze, and money. I do not condone his actions, and Avery is a piece of trash. No one should be homeless in Canada and the safety net exists to prevent this. It is by choice they live out on the streets.
You can't be serious.

Considering what a sad, pathetic thing this stunt was, I figured he had slipped into anonymity since being forced out of hockey and had nothing else to do but make fun of the most down-and-out people he could find.
I was way off!
He's had quite a run these last few years. He married an SI swimsuit model (Hilary Rhoda), and she sued her own mother for stealing her money, and mom in turn countersued, claiming Avery had brainwashed the daughter and convinced to her they didn't need a pre-nup.
So that's something! Sounds like a soap opera.
He also got arrested for throwing things at passing cars, and was found with all sorts of prescription drugs (including oxycodone) on his person that day. Legit prescriptions, it turns out.
Also sounds like he's trying to become a real estate hustler. Imagine buying a house from this weirdo.
His former teammate notes that Avery keeps finding “people to f - - k over,” but he’s also clever, even with his March 2012 NHL retirement announcement on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live,” when he declared that he “threw [his] skates in the Hudson.”
“He had to get ahead of the story. If he could have managed his work ethic and kept a lid on his antics, he still would have been playing. It’s not retirement if nobody wants to sign you to a contract. That’s called not having a job.
“Just look at his wedding list. None of his so-called best friends for the last 15 years were even at his wedding,” notes the former teammate.
“He was kicked off of every team he’s ever been on: Detroit, Los Angeles, the Rangers and then Dallas. He couldn’t sustain a relationship with a team.”
Adds the former friend: “Now he has imposed that bulldog toxic mentality in his relationship with Hilary.”
The more that I hear about Avery the more he reminds me of someone with Borderline Personality Disorder. Then again it is a bit of an armchair diagnosis from the Internet, so what the #### do I know.
