Because even though the leafs retained 1M on an 8M/yr contract, the leafs got a huge return.

I take Kessel over Hall any day. Neither are going to back check worth a damn but Kessel is a smart player and more importantly he never quits playing even if the team is struggling.

They will move players up a spot from where they are, but it's no longer a terrible defense corp, just a slightly below average one.

That's an important development for them.

That is still a very poor defensive corps like you say. Several #3/4 guys and still no true top pairing, all around defenders. Don't know if there are many teams you can peg below them at this point and time.
