That is a good deal when compared to Kane/Toews/Malkin etc.

Not the biggest Stamkos fan but I think that is actually less than I expected.

Yzerman is a good GM (Chiarelli and Bergevin are not)

Bishop likely on the way out. Elliot for Bishop one for one?

Honestly, we have the only competent GM in the NHL.

For those who wonder why Canadian teams haven't won the cup since 1993, just look at today's moves.
I dunno, getting Stamkos for $8.5 million seems like a competent move to me.

Chiarelli is rapidly establishing himself among the worst GMs in NHL history. You'd think no one could follow in the illustrious footsteps of MacT and Lowe, but they certainly found themselves the right man for the job!

Well, if we weren't going to get him, I'm glad it wasn't Toronto either.

I suppose if he has recurring blood clot issues, this is a risky contract (well all long term contracts are), but we're in an era where the best players get 10M+. Stamkos got 8.5M for the rest of his prime. Solid signing, in my opinion.

Considering all the talk surrounding what his value would be, 8.5/year seems very reasonable.

Any 8 year contract is scary but that is on low end of expectations. Makes me wonder what TB had been offering before this.

This speaks volumes to Stamkos' character. Granted, it is a lesser tax bracket, but that's big of him to sign for significantly less than he would have gotten to stay on a contender.

Stammer got paid.
That logic only makes sense if you think he would have retired after the end of the 7 year contract.

I was kind of hoping the Leafs would get Stamkos at $10 million plus. Would have made them better, but would have hosed their salary structure at the same time.

$8.5 for Tampa is really quite good. He's not going to live up to the back half of that deal, but the Lightning are very close right now. They are all-in for a Cup, right now.

Why? He cant sign another contract afterwards? With Tampa or Toronto?

Id rather have stammer at 8.5 than Monahan at 6.5. You'd have to think this might drive Monahan's price a little bit, but if they haven't reached a number yet, I'd be a little worried.
