Crazy that Lucic is only 28. It feels like he has been around forever.

I really like him as a player, but man, whatever he contract he ends up getting is going to be a massive anchor real quick.

It's one of those things where a GM has to look long term. He would be a great addition for two or three years but he clearly wants 5+ years and Treliving already knows that Giordano's contract won't look so hot in year four of that deal and you can't afford to have too many deals that are boat anchors preventing you from improving your team or retaining good young players.

I certainly can understand the fear around signing Lucic to a big term contract. However, the thought of one of the toughest guys in the league playing alongside Gaudreau and Monahan is very intriguing. Gaudreau and Lucic would kind of be like Plett and Nillson.

Disclaimer - I am very jaded by the fact I believe Gaudreau is the second coming and would keep Lucic's stats high enough to justify a big contract. Lucic having just enough talent to go with his size to get to the net with his stick down.

I think a 2 or 3 year deal would be ok and I like your points but I'm not sure 4+ years is a good idea

I think Lucic was really hoping to stay in LA so he can avoid the choice between Vancouver or the Alberta teams.

It's going to be a tough choice for him. If he chooses either Alberta team over the Canucks, he and his family is going to be vilified even more than they have been.

The bad apples in the Canuck army are some of the worst in professional sports. They already vandalized Lucic's family church after the 2011 Stanley Cup, can you imagine what they will do if he spurns the Canucks for their most hated rivals?

I think he'll sign in Vancouver. Just not worth the hassle even if it means choosing Bo Horvat over the McSaviour.

Lucic on a 6+ year contract is not something that would be that appealing. I could probably live with 6 years.

If you could get him for 5 years then I think its definitely worth pursuing.

Even if Lucic ends up overpaid by the end of his contract I don't think he'll be a complete boat anchor at 33.

He also effectively saves whichever team's GM from thinking he needs to shore up toughness as long as he is there. That means no $3 million contracts for guys like Engellend and no Bolligs on the fourth line.

There is some definite value in that.

Depends upon price.

Year. Price.
1. $6 mill
2. $6 mill
3. $5.5 mill
4. $5.0 mill
5. $3.5 mil
6. $3.5 mil
7. $3.0 mil
Average: $4.78

That we could all live with.

I think Lucic definitely brings value and could be a good addition to the Flames, but the price tag being thrown around is obscene. Sounds like some team is going to drastically overpay Lucic for a very long time. I Hope it's the Canucks or Oilers that screw up their cap!

Mwahaha I can see Lucic in a locker next to Hall going "Did you run through a wall head first ?"
Then thinking "OMG how long did I sign here for. I'm gonna kill my agent!"

That would be pretty excellent, but I think a more realistic price would start at 7.5 and not start dropping until year 5.

1. 7.5
2. 7.5
3. 7.5
4. 7.5
5. 7.5
6. 6.5
7. 5.5

That's $49 million or 7/year, which is probably where I think Lucic is going to come in. Let Vancouver shackle themselves to that.

I actually don't think he feels this way and certainly doesn't "already know".

Not sure why everyone thinks him going to Edmonton is a done deal. Oilers need help on the backend before they can sign another winger. Here comes the 6 x 6 deal if they do it up lol

I'll reiterate:

On Peter Chiarelli's very first day, at his very first press conference he explicitly stated the Oilers' need for Lucic.

Not 'a player like Lucic' or 'in the mold of Lucic' but literally Milan Lucic, by name.

And now all of a sudden the acquisition cost of Milan Lucic is just money? They'll pay it.

The Oilers have put themselves into a pretty bad cap spot in the years to come unless they move out one or two of the young guys making 6 mil a year. They've got 10mil+ in cap space but when you look at their big money deals, except for Fayne they are pretty much all long term, they've still got Nurse, McDavid and Draisaitl on entry levels which is probably about 17-20 million bucks in salaries going to hit them in the next two years (plus another top pick who will probably be on 4-6 mil a year coming this year potentially). Worst part is they still need to fit in 2 (or maybe even 3 depending on how you see Sekera) top 4 defencemen who will also need big deals.

They could go for Lucic but I think it would be pretty foolish long term, especially since although Gazdic is a plylon, they've added Maroon and Kassian who can both play a role and keep other teams honest.

Vancouver seems way more likely to me. I bet about $6.5x6 or maybe even 7. Hope the Flames stay well away.

Mike Commodore ‏@commie22
Random tweet....IMO...Milan Lucic will be playing for the Oilers next year.
I take away the "IMO" tweet...that's for pussies....so let me rephrase...
#PackYour#### And fly your big ass to Edmonton Milan Lucic.

About half an hour after those:

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Now that Milan Lucic is technically on open market, I expect EDM to have significant interest in him and he will have interest in EDM.
Lots of moving parts on negotiations so way too early to handicap it but no doubt in my mind EDM is going to be eager to explore it.

Price would be too high for us to play. Wouldn't mind him though as he can mentor guys like Ferland. Truculence, we might need more of that if he does land in Edm.
