I think Varlamov and 10th for Calgary's 6th, Colborne, and a mid 2nd rounder is a fair trade. I'd do it.

Varlamov is a good goalie but he makes too much money IMO. $5.9M for 3 more years. He had 1 outstanding year but hasn't lived up to $5.9M any other years.

I think Reimer at $3.5M for 3 years is much more manageable and way less risk. The best part is that no assets need to be given up.

I think acquiring Varlamov will require assets to be given up that could be used to move to #3.

What? You're trading down 4 spots and getting a solid #1 goalie. Whats the rub here? The Flames have what... 5 or 6 guys on their list they can easily get at #10. It's still in their comfort zone.

Bout time Colorado got mentioned.

Varly would be ok but the ideal target is Pickard.

Pickard/Reimer tandem for the win

Seems fair to me. We drop 4 spots and get a proven starter.

I don't get the objection. As mentioned dropping back only 4 spots to acquire a #1 goalie seems great to me.

Might be able to land Keller still at #10 and come away laughing.

Yeah pretty sure that he stopped reading at 6th.

Trading down 4 spots in a draft that seems to be up in the air from 6 - 12 and getting as starting goalie seemed like it was a pretty sweet outcome to me.

We aren't getting Tkachuk or Dubois. Dropping 4 spots to get Keller/Jost and getting a proven starter is a great trade for the Flames.

Isn't that true of every goalie? Even Kipper had his occasional stinker games where he let Mason Raymond score on a flip-in from centre ice.

Would be great if BT could also get Sakic/Roy to take a cap dump back in the deal too. Maybe get them to take a flyer on Raymond for 1 year.

It will be easier to find a goalie than it will be to find a scoring winger for our team.

I'm all for Varlamov, but i'm not including the #6 as part of the deal.

Ive done a good amount of homework on Varlamov over the past couple of days and I get the sense that there's two perspectives on Varlamaov, all their success hangs on him or all their failures hang on him. He's had some serious rough patches including stumbling out of the season on a string of losses. The other side blames the COL D and Roy over Varly.

IMO, a guy like Varlamov would fare very well behind the Flames D corps given the hope that they find consistency with Gulutzan. The guy with some more consistency and stability in front of him will get you more wins.

IMO the gap between 6 and 10 in the draft is minimal - I actually feel there is a chance Nylander or Keller is there at 10 still.

If Colorado moves up its because they want their pick of the d-men - if the top 5 go according to plan then:

6) Colorado - rumored to want a d-man and need d prospects
7) Arizona - rumored to want a d-man and need d prospects
8) Buffalo - Toss up but also rumored to be high on the d-men
9) Montreal - high on Brown
10) Calgary - Nylander/Keller/Mcleod

I'd prefer the Flames use the 6th to move up to to 3rd for Puljujarvi (or if Tkachuk or Dubois are still on the board then stay put) but the top 5 go according to plan and a team like Colorado wants us to only move back 4 spots and we can get a 28 year old starting goalie from them then I'm all for it. We would still get a great forward at 10 or if all the forwards are gone then you are getting the top d-man in the draft.

Avs fan here. Don't want the Avs to trade Varly within the same conference. When he is on he can be the best goalie in the league, and he would do very well in front of the Flames D (and the fact that at least some of the Flames forwards can point out where the D zone is). He does well when he gets a few more shots on net so that he gets into the rhythm of things. He is exceptionally athletic and can make that ridiculous save that turns momentum around.

The bad side is that when he is off his game he can be a disaster. At this point the Avs lack of anything resembling defensive zone coverage means that when he is off he really doesn't get any help.
