I liked Strombolopoulos and find Ron Maclean boring. However I also really liked Mark Lee as a commentator, so my opinions are generally in the minority.
Too bad, never like hearing about people losing their jobs. However what I desperately want is Rogers to make HNIC the event it used to be.
Strombolopoulos was never going to "accepted" regardless of how he performed at his job.
Disagree. I really didn't like Elliotte Friedman when he was on The Score, and so wasn't happy to see him take a place on the HNIC panel. Hate to admit it, but he just seemed too nerdy and stiff. However, he won me over quickly with his quality journalism, and is now someone I tune in to see, and I seek out his written columns.
Had Strombo come in and been a solid, knowledgeable host, instead of a spastic, giggling, sycophant, he could have similarly won over hockey viewers. But he didn't. Now he's out of a job.
Hometown hockey is basically Ron MacLean's entire faux Canadiana schtick turned into a show.
Probably more Rogers shtick then MacLean's. Also those of us living in communities over 100000 are probably more jaded on the whole hometown hockey gig then people actually living in those small town communities they are trying too promote.
Is it possible that Strombo simply cost too much, and therefore, was the easiest way to cut a chunk out of the budget? I don't think he was making or breaking their ratings, so it's easy to say goodbye if he's your highest paid on air personality, which he most likely was.

On the Edmonton Oilers’ 2015-16 playoff hopes:
“Fantastic. I think for sure playoffs. I tell you who’s going to be lights-out this year is Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall.
“They went over to the World Championship and played with Crosby, which is similar to Messier and Gretzky. Not that they needed any encouragement but those two Oilers flanked Mario Lemieux at the crucial moment of the Canada Cup in ’87. Now you have two Oilers flanking Sid to a gold. You watch Eberle take off. He’s already been great in international hockey, but I think this is going to be his year, Taylor Hall’s year.
“And Connor McDavid and Darnell Nurse will fit in. Gimme a glass of wine or a beer, and I think in two years they win the Cup. That may be a little eager, but I don’t think more than four.

It's harsh for Sportsnet to pillory anybody on the broadcast team because ratings are down. Firing Strombo isn't going to make all the teams in Canada better at playing hockey all of a sudden.

Reason: Grammar
That was in my thought process as well. MacLean is just another lemming talking head spitting disconnected opinion, random quotes & information while being void of actual insight.
The real issue isn't MacLean or Strombo it is an endless plethora of options for personal free time outside of hockey and traditional media. Switching from Strombo seems dumb because again it makes the fringe audience question what is going on. I don't think Strombo is the problem or the solution, but he is at least someone that is young enough to grow and evolve with the entire production.
I wonder what Roger's motives are/were? Was it originally to attract and improve ratings? Has it now shifted to maintaining or restoring ratings?
Thank goodness Strombo is gone. He was terrible. His knowledge was limited, his suits were ridiculous, and he couldn't lead the panel. He would get up and start walking around, clapping his hands, and howling in laughter, when anyone on the panel made a mildly funny joke. I'm glad he's gone, and he doesn't deserve the job.

Dude when it comes to the Canucks, it could be a team of Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot, Augusto Pinochet, Josef Stalin and Kim Jong Il and if one of them scores against the Canucks you take it.
