I wonder if Winnipeg would entertain the idea of running Byfuglien as a forward this year in order to keep Myers Trouba and Enstrom...???

I would imagine the NHL has position eligibility rules set up.

Byfuglien may be able to be declared as a forward based on next year and his time in Chicago...

They set it up close to perfectly IMO. No matter what a team is forced to expose either one of their top 4 defensemen, or one of their top 6 forwards; which I believe was the plan. Only slight change I would have made is made it 3D+6F or 8 skaters.

I am not sure there is a maximum.

In the past, there's been a minimum number of players at each position required for the expansion team to take, usually with the last four or five spots open to any position. The goalie minimum has been three previously, but Nashville took 5.

If Gillies was available, he'd likely be safe anyway, but you never know. Vegas could take a couple of veterans to be their NHL tandem and a young prospect for the AHL, and the Flames might not have anyone else that Vegas really wants.

However, at the STH event tonight, Treliving said that as they currently understand what the expansion draft rules will be, they're 99.9% sure that Gillies will be exempt.

Also, this is really a pointless exercise for at least another month. Until this year's free agency is in the books, we have no idea which players will be under contract with which teams next year.

For now the most interesting thing about this is seeing who might make a deal at the draft.

A ducks - coilers trade sure looks like a fit.

@calgarypuckcom the Expansion Tool should be considered illustrative of the rules reported to date. Not official by any means.

By the looks of things the expansion team will have a really good & deep d-core, good goaltending, and a horrible offensive group.
