In the last version of this thread, I guessed $2.75M-$3.5M. So I'll stand by those numbers.

Nice looking bell curve shaping up.

Good grief why would anyone want to let him walk?

I get not wanting him on the team, but you freaking qualify him and trade him then lol.

Just a terrible notion and would be terrible asset management.

Cause if he rewarded 3.9 or whatever it is no one will want him and we'll be stuck with him?

That's assuming there is a trade market for him.

If it went to arbitration, the contract would be 1 or 2 years, at the option of the team, correct? Or maybe it can only be for one year, I need the CBA guys to help me out.

It is usually the team's choice of 1 or 2 years, if the player files for arbitration. However because Colborne is 1 year from UFA, I believe he can force to be a 1 year arbitration award.

Yikes. I thought just shy of $4mil would be an insane ask from Colborne, but a quick look at nhlnumbers.com for forwards in the 24-26 range, scoring around 40 points and it looks pretty bad. Granted, some of these guys have more than one year at that pace and I am not sure of bought UFA years, but is Colborne really that far off of: Anders Lee (3.75), Cody Eakin (3.85), Colin Wilson (3.938), Brendan Gallagher (3.75) or Jakob Silfverberg (3.75)?

I may need to brace myself for disappointment (guessed 2-2.5 mil)

He should have gotten Bouma's contract instead of Bouma getting it. I think for a good sized 30-40 pts player who can cycle (he's one of the few who can), what Bouma got for cap hit and term would have been pretty fair.

I voted $2.5M to 3.0M thinking he could double his salary of $1.275 to $2.55M. So just above the bottom of my range.

Those suggesting not qualifying him make me think that they know nothing about running a business or a pro hockey team? It's way beyond shaking my head, it's upchuck territory.

I'd suggest there's definitely a trade market for him. He was a good pickup and has increased his value from the 4th rounder given up for him. I believe that's true whether you believe he's in the long term plans or not.

Except they were not in the hunt, and it was absolutely "garbage time" for the team. Lots of players were getting a shot they didn't necessarily deserve. Hell, we even gave Backstrom some games in net. Racking up points when the games don't matter is pointless, and it means relatively nothing. Lots of players put up points when the pressure is off, but it only matters when the pressure is on. I agree with Burke on that one.

Maybe I'm naive but I get the sense that Colborne values playing for his hometown Flames and getting paid 2ish million a year than playing for someone else for 3ish per year.

No basis for this really, but I feel like he's one of the very rare cases of a player who will take less to play in his hometown.

If the Flames want him, I bet he stays for a price the Flames agree with.

I can't help but think the team is better in the long run without him eating up minutes. Surely there are guys in Stockton who could play his minutes.

Trade him if possible, but I doubt that's in the cards. I'd let him walk.

I'd normally say just give him 3 years for 10 and be done with it but the Flames already have too many guys on those medium end contracts.

Stajan, Backlund, Bouma, Frolik, Raymond all making above league average and most of them are producing below league average results.

It's gonna be a tough call, but the market says 3 million plus isn't out of line. No need for Colborne to take a discount seeing as he has done that already.

Maybe the Flames could justify a raise for Colborne by giving him most of the money they were paying Jones. Really starting to dislike the way this team is built.

If any team is going to get a home town discount on Colborne its the flames. What if he won't sign for $2.5-$2.75 million? I'm not convinced there is a team out there that wants to pay him more. Maybe another team will go to $3 million, but there is no way they go anymore. Also why would another team want him if he can elect to go to arbitration ?

You make it sound like the Flames organization is overflowing with forwards that can put up 30+ points/season. They aren't as there is a major drop off from Monahan and Gadreau's offensive production to Backlund, Colborne, Bennett, Frolik and then further off a cliff to guys like Jooris, Ferland, Stajan, Bouma, etc.

If the next coach employs a more defensively structured game there's the likelihood of less points from the blue line and I simply don't see forwards on the roster that can pick up that slack and removing Colborn would make that worse.

You're making it sound like he has played his way out of the league. I agree he hasn't earned big money on a LT deal but on a one year deal lots f teams would like him IMO.

Sorry my post does sound rather harsh after re-reading it.LOL.

For the record i want to keep Colborne. I like the strides he made last year and hope he can build on that.

My point in the other post is that Colborne has arbitration rights. Many teams would stay clear of him for that reason, unless they know for sure they can work out a deal before hand.
