Russia's GDP is about the same as Canada's. Both are smaller than Italy's.

Also remember that this weapon can reach it target at a maximum range in about 20 minutes, so your talking about the US command structure being able to gather intelligence and be able to get a decision in a short period of time and launch the missiles. If there's any kind of delay or the briefing or decision takes too long these missiles could punch significant holes in the American targeting package as the real heavy long range missiles that the Americans have are silo based. On top of that the Russians have spent a lot of years now developing their 5th generation submarines which are built to hunt down American Boombers, on top of that the Americans have sharply reduced their at sea submarine missile capabilities they are down to about 18 Ohio class submarines now as they converted or retired the rest. The new line of missile boats won't be online until 2029.
That really leaves cruise missiles launched from aircraft and naval ships, but those aren't the really big warheads that are designed for counterforce, but are more designed for tactical instead of strategic targets.
On top of that when you have a missile that can take out a area the size of France it likely means the evacuation of the American command structure would probably not be successful. It also means that the Russian missiles don't have to be super accurate to take out the missile fields, long range air force bases and sub bases

As long as either country has 3 or 4 surviving SSBM's deep in the ocean the basic premise of MAD still holds and makes everything else pointless

The shortened decision making window might increase the probability of accidental nuclear war. There have been documented instances in the past where early warning suggested a massive launch and only patience gave enough time to determine it was a false alarm. Maybe the detection systems are more accurate now, but the quicker a decision needs to be made the higher the chances of a mistake being made.

Not likely, Most ICBM's can go 20+ mach, the early 60's "minuteman" ICBM was the fastest thing ever in it's time at mach 23 I believe, even the Space Shuttle had to go mach 24 to escape the Earth's gravity.
As for this missile, it's just more Putin saber rattling. I think Ballistic Missile Submarines are far more dangerous, just one sub hiding off the coast of Newfoundland could fire 20 missiles with a total of 200 warheads (containing 150 kt each) could annihilate the entire North American seaboard in 10 minutes.
Scary world we live in.

I wonder what the plan is - is he just going to retire and buy Man U? Or better yet, Wolverhampton.

I dont understand why anyone with that amount of wealth would bother with the tedious task of running a nation.
I'd be dropping that mic and peacing out so fast it'd make their heads spin.

These guys can never quit because they are always scared that the next guy (or the ICC) will put them on trial. So, pretty much have to hang on to power out of self-preservation. What's the point of stealing all that money if you can't buy a football team and fire the manager every month?
