Another in a long line of WTF by the Oilers though. This was taylor made for them to grab a guy who was exactly what they needed, and Chiarelli, who is proving to be worse than the mediocre GM I took him to be, decided that this season was about patience, evaluation, blah blah, blah. How long do you need to evaluate that team before you are able to identify areas of need?

I take it you thought they should trade Taylor Hall for Hamonic?

No doubt. Look how hard he's breathing. The only time Hall breathes that hard is when skating from the far blueline to the bench to avoid a minus.

LOL... there were some oilers fans who didn't think a 4 for Hamonic was "worth it" and that the Isles should throw something else in?!
wow... no wonder they continue to suck.

My guess is that Snow wasn't in a rush to make a deal until/unless Hamonic forced his hand (probably hoping that what happened would happen).
A 25 year-old top-pairing defenceman who is signed for 4 more seasons at less than $4 million per season isn't something a GM is going to be happy to trade away.

Snow always wanted a dman of Hamonic's calibre and age coming back the other way. Vancouver and Edmonton don't have one, Calgary wasn't going to give up theirs, and Winnipeg's perhaps wasn't ripe enough for the Isles.
I'm not surprised he never ended up making a trade.

Good. I wanted the Flames to add him, but it wasn't realistic given what the Isles supposedly wanted in return, so I'm glad he isn't going to one of our western Canadian rivals.

Gonna be interesting to see what Chiarelli can do this offseason. He basically needed a big, strong, heavy top pairing guy like Hamonic AND a powerplay quarterback. I think the powerplay QB can be had but finding those top pairing studs are next to impossible.
Hopefully they can't find a high end d-man and end up having to draft one. That makes the idea of trading up with them even more realistic. They could trade down to #6 and have their pick of the d-men still if VAN takes a forward. And even if VAN took a d-man they'd still have a choice of Tkachuk/Dubois and 2 of the dmen.

true enough, however, a guy like that doesn't come up that often, so if there was ever a time (or organization) that ought to overpay a little, it was Edmonton.
If you can get a rock for the next decade for your non-existent defense, you don't ##### around trying to save nickels on the dollar...
but whatever, i am thrilled the Oilers didn't get Hamonic... hopefully they'll draft another forward with their 4th too...

Hopefully this incentivizes them to draft a dman.

I obviously agree on the topic as a whole, but that word, man, that is one heck of a word right there. That word deserves it's own post.

Those defensemen aren't easily available unless they're 30+ years old near the end of their contract and making huge dollars.
And the cost of them is going to be high, especially if they're in the 25 year old range.
Calgary got lucky with Hamilton, and part of it I'm sure is due to a screw Chia mentality that the Bruins had at the time.
But Edmonton is going to have to give up their first round pick ++ to even get a sniff, and I love saying it, its a sellers market so that ++ could end up being a piece that Edmonton doesn't want to move.
And no that doesn't include guys like Fayne, Poulliot or Grandmaster Ebs.
