I'm amazed that all stores haven't sent a memo to their cashiers letting them know this existed. I mean, this is the person responsible with taking payment for a transaction, and you can't even be bothered to tell them that people may now be paying directly with their phone? Who is running these companies?

If not it seems like an easy way to steal someones credit card as long as you have the numbers. At least with online you would have a physical address to tie it to.
|
No, I don't need anything. If you wanted to buy something from me, you could phone me with your credit card number and I'd ring you through. It's that simple.

I'll guess you're a BMO customer as they seem to have the worst debit cards in the world, I have to replace mine constantly.
The cards tend to get bent easily and if the chip reader slot is a bit bigger then the chip doesn't make good contact. Keep a business card with you and try putting the business card in under the card; that seems to work for me.
REALLY looking forward to debit on Apple Pay so I can stop replacing my debit card every 3 months.

CIBC actually.
I probably get 12-18 months out of a card on average and the problem is you don't know it's NFG until you have already committed to the purchase which poses huge issues sometimes.
It makes little sense to me as to why you can't use the mag stripe if the chip fails. Redundancy and all that but they don't seem to be interested in that.

I believe once the retailer signs the new chip agreement with the bank they are off the hook for any fraudulent purchases a customer might make. If they continue to accept mag stripe transactions they are not covered, or not covered fully.

I'm not sure of the legalities, but I'm pretty sure the bank rejects the transaction if not chip and the machine is chip capable. At my store at least, if you try the wrong side of the card first the machine will say to use mag strip. Then when you do, it comes back declined by the bank with the response "card use limited".
If I'm remembering correctly, it's because all liability on chip use is on the bank/CC not the retailer, so the don't want to use the less secure means

What about tap? It annoys me to no end that retailers (i.e. MEC) have Tap-Enabled machines but don't take tap.

I've noticed Safeway/Sobeys accept tap for credit, not debit.

That's on the retailers. Companies like Moneris charge more to enable tap capabilities.

Interesting. I just tapped for debit about four days ago at a new sobeys. Unless it just happened in the last few days then it must be localized.

Safeway's old POS took tap for debit. When they switched over to Sobey's POS, that feature was lost. Which is stupid.

I can't believe how long it's taking for all of our ID to go electronic. With the fingerprint sensor, my phone is way more secure than my wallet. I'd love to have my license and all my cards in my phone. Seems archaic to be walking around with a bunch of plastic cards inside a flap of leather.

Tried using Apple Pay at PetroCanada today. Tapped and a the pump starting screaming bloody murder and flashing all kinds of lights. Tapped my credit card and it worked fine. Maybe it's not configured for gas pumps yet?

Yeah, I can't make that leap.
I know I am yelling at clouds and angry about kids on my lawn, but I don't know, there is just something about it I can't get by.

That's odd because petrocan is on the list of supported retailers, but maybe not at the pump perhaps.

Just so you know most merchant agreements allow this but you are not covered in case of a chargeback. This happened to us with a stolen credit card over the phone and a Canada goose jacket. We got our transaction reversed because the card was reported stolen and because we punched it in we have no leg to fight it.
Because we do a fair number of payments over the phone we decided to setup an account just for that which works like any online purchase.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. What do you mean you set up an account for that? How does that protect you?

It is another merchant number specifically for phone and online transactions. It does cost more (can't remember the amount) but we are setting up an online store and we would need this type of merchant number anyways. It protects us as it requires the CC billing address when it goes through, similar to buying something online. If the billing address does not match the CC the transactions fails. Really you could do this buy phoning your payment processor and having them verify it too without costing you anything. We went over 50years without an issue, so it's not a common thing, but we definitely some learned what the fraudsters do to get away with things.
