Alex Honnold. Commitment on other worldly levels. I probably don't know enough to be amazed by most people. But I understand this guy. And his world is unimaginable.

I didn't really mean it like that. Just that the way he speaks and what he talks about.

Don't forget that he started out as an absolutely dominant trailblazer in linguistics.

Sylvia Earle
From http://mission-blue.org/
Quote:
Mission Blue is an initiative of the Sylvia Earle Alliance (S.E.A.) to ignite public support for the protection of Hope Spots—special places that are vital to the health of the ocean, the blue heart of our planet. We draw inspiration from the vision of our founder, Dr. Sylvia Earle, and are uniting a global coalition of partners to inspire an upwelling of public awareness, access and support for a worldwide network of marine protected areas. From the seamounts of the high seas to the shallow sunlit reefs, Mission Blue seeks to bring about a significant increase in ocean protection from less than four percent today to 20% by the year 2020. Under Dr. Earle’s leadership, the Mission Blue team has embarked on a series of expeditions to further this vision and shed light on these ocean Hope Spots. We also bring the discoveries and stories of a network of ocean experts to the public through documentaries, social and traditional media, and innovative tools like Google’s “Explore the Ocean” layer. Additionally, we support the work of many conservation NGOs with whom we share the basic mission of ocean protection and public awareness. Currently, the Mission Blue coalition includes over 100 respected ocean conservation groups and like-minded organizations — from large multinational companies down to individual scientific teams doing important research. Decades of overfishing, pollution, climate change, acidification and other human pressures threaten the fundamental nature of the ocean—and therefore threaten the future of humankind.

Yea, I know. You've never met or listened to an older person and thought "this is how I will be when I'm older"?
It's more about the type of person and their perspective than anything to do with their accomplishments.

Quite the opposite; Noam Chomsky is a myopic ideologue. Matty's selling himself short.

Really? I think he's the opposite of myopic. He looks at things at a very macro scale, sometimes to a fault. But near-sighted is the last thing I would describe him as.
Also, I'm getting pretty tired of "ideologue" being used with a negative context all the time. It's coming close to commie or socialist for the way it seems top be presented by most people. We're all ideologues about something. If you're not an ideologue about anything what are you? Someone who doesn't stand for anything?

If we are talking about his political writings, then, yes, I agree. His work in the field of linguistics could be considered Newtonian. Paradigm-shifting.

Billy Bragg, always a hero of mine then got to meet him a few years ago backstage at the Orpheum, I was terrified as almost every famous musician in the world is a narsasistic ###### bag, he was a really nice down to earth bloke who spent half an hour asking me questions about being a youth worker.

Oh, Peter Hitchens - the brother of the late Christopher Hitchens. I have casually sent him questions and comments to his personal email address, and he has always promptly responded. Occasionally, we have even struck up a bit of a correspondence. Classy dude.

My daughter. In the event that family members don't count for this exercise then I ask myself this question... what human being on earth is most likely to become Iron Man? Therefor I gotta say Elon Musk.
