I'm curious how many people on CP have donated and I'm too tired to go through and count.
if you donated, then go and thank the above post by Dragon. I'm hoping we surpass our goal of 100 donors from CP.

Say I've got $5 to donate, the federal govt will match so it becomes $10.
Has anyone mapped out any donation ladders where I could donate my $5 at some random business and it kicks off a chain reaction of matching so that it ends up becoming $100 (or something like that)?

I rent out rooms. Two of my boarders finally made it out of Ft Mac yesterday and emailed their rent for May - which I donated on their behalf to Red Cross.
So add $1000 more please, before matching.

Some friends of mine are looking to set up a gaming marathon stream to raise money for Fort McMurray (speedrunners mostly, for those who care). We've done these with success in the past, but the interest is already growing beyond what one person's house can hold.
Does anyone know of a place that can hold 20-30 people for 2-3 days and has an excellent internet connection? The places we've looked at so far (community centers) are quoting pretty high rental rates where it's likely to cancel out a lot of the funds raised. If you know of a place with decent rates, or even if your local condo/apartment building has a rec room that can be rented out with good internet, that would be very helpful.
Thanks!

The universities, maybe? Give the student councils a call or a quick email and they might be able to help, as well.

Trying to get my workplace's casual day proceeds directed to the Red Cross for the month of May. There have also been a ton of local businesses asking for donations at the check-out, plus the local police are holding a "Fill the Sack for Fort Mac" fundraiser this week where people try to fill book bags with cash donations.
Everyone out here has some sort of connection to Fort McMurray, whether it's a family member or friend or friend-of-a-friend, so we're definitely pulling for everyone affected. Not sure if there's more we can do from afar besides money; if anyone has any ideas, feel free to share!

We donated 400.00 on Friday to the RC.
Far more impressive was my little brother though. He lives in Edmonton area and has a staff of 20 or so there, he also had a satellite office in Ft Mac. where there were 3 employees. 2 of them from Edmonton and 1 from Calgary who had moved up there within the last couple of years. On Thursday morning he called me, said he was in town for some meetings and asked if I could help him later that day to which i said of course.
Once he was done with his last meeting he got on the computer and started looking for accomodations. He then went and prepaid 4 months of rent and SD on a basement suite. He then bought up a bunch of furniture off kijiji which is why he asked me to help. We went and picked up the furniture sight unseen and went to the suite he had rented...dropped all that off and went back to pick up some beds etc for the bedrooms. We then took those back to the suite and headed to Walmart, where he proceeded to spend several hundred dollars on food/toiletries/dishes/gift cards etc and then we went back and stocked the house with that stuff. As we were there for that last bit the owner of the house decided to get involved and said the SD would be used as a months rent and also tacked on one more. It was really amazing and showed so well the spirit of good people doing great things for other good people.
So in the end his employee and his wife and child have a place to stay and not worry about rent and such for a good long while and just get everything straight while it takes time to get back up there and start a rebuild of their home and business. Once that process gets the go ahead he will be there from the start to oversee it all while his family has a safe and secure place here.
The other 2 employees in Edmonton experienced the same treatment at the hands of their fellow employees and will be in their new homes no later than tomorrow.
None of the evacs that work for him know the fate of their homes in FM (though 2 of them were in that Beacon Hill area if i understood correctly) but it really doesnt matter as it will be weeks and possibly months before they can get back up there to start the rebuild. Now they can simply focus on doing what's most needed to make sure life can get back to normal.
Massive kudos to the first responders up there and to all the volunteers province wide who have taken the challenge on of helping these most unfortunate families who did nothing wrong except be in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

Wife decided for Mother's Day the family was to donate $100 in her name to the Red Cross instead of a Mother's Day gift. So that's what we did.

Hey guys, i know this isnt a monetary donation but
if anyone knows any Ft Mac residents who'd like their own place, I have an semi furnished empty condo they can stay in for free.
I could only talk the landlord into letting someone stay till the end of may but its got to be better than cots and shared accomodation. parking available, pet friendly and i'll split the electricity bill with the resident
message me if you know someone who wants to take up on the offer
