Is it trendy to do to hate on Karlsson? Guy had an elite year offensively. Doughty had a great year too. As did Burns. All are deserving candidates. You don't have to spit on one guy to praise the other.

No I appreciate Karlsson for what he is, he just isn't my ideal of a defenceman. To me a defenceman's priority should be defence not offence. Kind of why I appreciate a player like Doughty or Brodie that sacrifice their stats a bit to play a solid game.

I know this will never happens, but lets say hypothetically all 3 are available for the expansion draft, and that GM can only pick one. Which one do you think he will pick? If I'm that GM, I'll pick Doughty in a heartbeat.

Just so much negativity. Not just in this thread, but everywhere here. It can't be healthy. All of those guys are really good players. I love watching them. It's possible to debate who is better without crapping on the other.
Aside:
So much hate in the other hockey threads,too. People hating on Perry, Kesler, Bieksa, LA cap circumvention, Kane, Keith. Find something position to follow. Cheer for Tavares, who is stud that doesn't get enough TV time. Cheer for Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat, the new Zetterberg/Datsyuk in that they went undrafted and very low in the draft. Cheer for Benn if you like old-fashioned hard-nosed hockey. Joe Thornton and Marleau are respectable vets who are deserving of making a Cup Final. Appreciate the splendor of two really good teams in the Atlantic battling it out. There are so many positive storylines to follow.

That's insane. The guy is a point per game defenseman who also has two Norris trophies, possibly 3, and he's only 25. I'm curious to see which 7 defenseman you think are better than him. Personally I think he's the 2nd best defenseman on the planet outside of Doughty.

IMO that's all justified and something that's not exclusive to the Flames fan base as those players are universally disliked and nobody was happy about the Kings circumventing the cap.
Karlsson's a very good offensive defensemen but we are talking about the 2nd worst defensive team in the league in the Ottawa Senators. IMO that's about as much as I need to know to shift my vote to to one of the other guys who played on teams that were better defensively and that they both played major roles in helping those teams get into the playoffs.

Karlsson and Doughty are both great. Doughty just gets asked to play on a team where he actually has to play defense, where Karlsson has more freedom to be a rover.
My biggest issue with Karlsson winning is that while his defensive game has improved a lot, he is still a bit of a tire fire defensively. He was on the ice for the most ES goals against in the league at 101, and even though he generates a ton offensively that still leaves him in the red on the ledger.
On the other hand Doughty is a beast defensively - with only 54 goals against even strength.
Personally if I'm building a team to win games I take Doughty.

I'm not disagreeing, but I think those parameters are dumb.
Doughty was a humongous and integral part of the Kings making the playoffs. Karlsson led his team nowhere.
It's silly to me that Karlsson would get the nod over Doughty because he put up a bunch of meaningless points.

That should be the Paul Coffee award for best offensive defenceman...who doesn't really defend that well.
I think Doughty should be the winner because he is the best true defenseman in this group. Burns and Karlsson both do a great job of generating offence, and Burns possibly was the best PP player in the NHL this year.
They need a Corsi style Norris for guys who had the bad zone starts but still outscored and outchanced their opponents.

I like Burns for the Norris but the NHL writers are giving Doughty the most publicity. Burns deserves the hardware.

It's easy to come up with certain stats that appear to be quite telling.
Doughty: Would be the second lowest total points of a Norris winner for a full season in 30 years.
Karlsson: Would be the first non-playoff Norris winner, on one of the worst goals against teams, won with a minus +/-, etc.
Burns: Would win as a forward/defense hybrid, win with a minus.
Someone will win the Norris despite some obscure stat.
