I can't say I have watched either player very much so my opinion is based of what highlights I have watched and articles I have read. To me it is very close between Matthews and Laine.

Laine is the perfect fit for the Flames top line. A 6'4 205lb right shot sniper is exactly the type of player that added to Gaudreau and Monahan could form the top line in the NHL.

What I read about Matthews I always see "Franchise center" tag associated with him. Considering a franchise centre is a more important position than top line winger I still take Matthews first overall. Adding Matthews he would be a great fit with Sam Bennett who could switch back to winger and develop there permanently.

They either take Matthews, or they move down from 1st to 2nd and add a quality piece.

For example 1st OA for 2nd OA + Brock Boeser is a trade I think would make sense for Calgary. Laine + Boeser would instantly fix all our RH shot troubles.
