Wotherspoon looked good to me as well and IMO there's a good chance he will start next season on the bottom pairing.

FWIW I attended a luncheon with Brian Burke back at the beginning of March. Said they offered Russell 4 years at "an annual amount that started with 4". Turned it down because they felt they could get 7 years and more money on the FA market.
I loved Russell, but I don't even want him at that 4 x4.(?) let alone being handcuffed to that contract for 7 years.

WHat is your top 7 next fall? Keep in mind Wideman and Smid are under contract, Jokipakka and Engelland are as well, and we all love Nakladal.

Who wouldn't want to sign Russell at $3 million? Trade him again at the deadline for a similar haul. Hell I would do that every year.
But his return in that trade shows that his market value is well in excess of $3 million and Flames need to work on constructing a defense around their big 3. Signing Russell likely moves Hamilton down to #4 in the immediate term and he makes too much to play there.

Wideman dealt
Smid to LTIR is what I'm assuming so far since we haven't heard a peep on him after Treliving's post trade deadline presser
Brodie-Hamilton
Gio-Nakladal/Engelland
Jokipakka-Nakladal/Engelland
Wotherspoon
Any injury in camp/preseason could hand Wotherspoon a top 6 role to start like Kulak had to start last fall

I agree he looked good. Kid REALLY needs to figure out how to come in ready and have a good camp.

that is freaking scary if management hasn't learned you can't have these 3-4 million contracts clogging up the bottom half of your roster. you should be ponying up hard for your true stars, and filling out the rest with value meal material.
bad medium size contracts are what's weighing down the team right now, I can't believe they would have wanted to add another one to it.

RE Andersson:
I'll agrue Anderrson is the most NHL ready D man in the Flames' Prospect system.
I swear if there wasn't a log jam at D on the big club this past season Andersson earned a roster spot. Since he was drafted as from the CHL they couldn't send him to the farm so the only place he could go was back to Barrie. That extra year of seasoning is really paying off from all accounts too.
Don't be shocked if he earns a spot out of camp next year.

While I do believe he is going to be a amazing piece for the flames going foreardI dont believe he is near a NHL roster spot. Next year his goal is to be a impactful AHL dman.

Pump the brakes a bit. The kid wasn nowhere near in NHL shape.
He looked good. But he wasn't ready, including from a conditioning standpoint.

Russell >> Jaybo any day. Russell plays with a lot of heart and it showed on the ice. Just wished he was bigger. Let's hope the Stars get the Flames another first rounder - Nieuwendyk, Iggy, ??? - 3 times a charm!
