Everything is moot if we don't find this team a couple of goalies, so that's my only wish.

I hope Flames don't get ahead of the rebuild.
Especially goaltending
so take a risk or two; high upside no sure thing guys.
Example; We got Kipper for second and it was no sure thing at the time.

If we crap out we'll pick high again for one more year. Its all OK.

This team will gunning for the playoffs next season, there will be no half-measures IMO. If Treliving misses next year because of goaltending again, he will find himself on the hot seat. He's not taking that risk, a quality, proven goalie WILL be acquired. I'd bet my house on it.

1. Acquire a starting goalie who will play 55 - 60 games.
2. The Flames regain the confidence and swagger of last season.
3. Special teams (PP & PK) vastly improve.
4. Most of the RFAs re-sign to value contracts.
5. Puck possession improves.
6. Calgary wins one of the draft lotteries and picks in the Top 3.

Here are some wishes, but I am not sure how realistic they are.

1) Re-sign our best players to value deals. (Gaudreau, and Monahan for less than $14M combined).
2) Trim some fat from the bottom of our roster.
3) Get our younger players the right offseason plan, so they can bulk up and improve for next season. (Mainly Bennett, Hamilton, and Ferland)
4) Avoid signing an average goaltender to a long term deal, or trading for one. (ex: Ward, Ramo, Enroth, Raanta, and Howard). I think that in the 2017-18 offseason there will be a lot more gems on the goaltending market(Bishop, Bernier, S. Mason, Elliott, and Neuvirth).
5) Add more cheap, young, and physical players to our bottom six. (ex: Hathaway)
6) Make the system the Flames play more flexible, and harder to shut down.

1) Hire Julien or Hitchcock
2) Trade for Bishop
3) Trade Wideman to open up a D spot for Nakladal to start the season

1. Sign Monahan and Gaudreau to 1 year bridge deals for $5 Million each (they will make it back on the contracts they sign next year). They will agree to do this because it will leave a little extra room to...

2. Sign Okposo to play with Sean and Johnny on the first line.

3. Trade a 2nd round draft pick for Brian Elliott.

4. If picking outside the top three, trade down to about 8 or 9 and select Michael McLeod.

5. Re-sign Derek Grant, then buyout Matt Stajan.

6. Sign David Schlemko for the league minimum.

7. (Bonus) Staple Bollig's rear end to a seat in the pressbox.

1) Sign Monahan/Gaudreau for 13.5-14 million for the pair for 6+ years (preferably 8)
2) Sign Reimer or trade for one of Smith/Fleury/Bishop/Elliott
3) If picking in top 5, pick a forward, if 6-7-8, take either Dubois, Nylander, or a D-man
4) Depending on who is drafted, sign a forward that makes sense in relation to the other players.
5) Attempt to trade all of Wideman/Stajan/Raymond/Engelland/Bollig. If not possible, bury the forwards in Stockton.
6) Sign a decent veteran #4 D-man if Wideman is traded, Nakladal if he isn't.

1. Sign Gaudreau to 8yr/56M and Monahan to 8yr/52M.
2. Trade Wideman (50% retained) and Kylington to Dallas for Nichushkin.
3. Trade Poirier and Klimchuk for Matt Murray.
4. Sign David Backes for 4yrs/24M.
5. Trade Bollig and Raymond for late picks.
6. Re-sign Nakladal and Ortio to low-cost, one-way deals.

Pie in the sky kind of stuff, but those are the kinds of moves I feel are needed for this team to fight for a playoff spot next year.

For number 3, can teams do that? I mean it is the offseason, can the teams tell them what to do.

Without fully understanding the expansion draft rules, it's impossible to know who to trade/acquire/sign. No point in giving up assets for players we will lose in one year.

Very true, I just hope on April 30, they tell us all the rules.

1) win the draft lottery (at the very least top 3 pick)
2) get a new goalie
3) add a solid 21-27 year old RW to play on the top line
4) clear out some of the dead weight contracts (Stajan, Wideman, Smid, Raymond, Bollig)
5) Add another top 6 forward to play with Bennett and Matthews/Laine/Puljujarvi
6) get a solid #4D

1. Fire Hartley. Bring in a coaching staff that can coach the Xs and Os and improve our special teams. I'm tired of seeing 20 icings a game because of the Hail Mary stretch pass that fails to connect.

2. Get two goaltenders. Get into the free agent market and get a couple of new goaltenders. Do NOT go out and trade assets for a guy that relies on big pads and a XXXXXXXXXL jersey to make saves. I think the NHL is serious about reducing equipment and making it form fitting. These guys that rely on their equipment to stop pucks may become extinct in short order. I'd be okay with the Flames getting Reimer and Raanta as their duo for next season.

3. Get some size and finish on RW. They won't be able to afford the big names on the market, but they should be able to go out and sign a guy like Troy Brouwer and then make a deal for some size. I would target Dallas and see if they can shake loose one of Nichkushkin or Ritchie.

4. Have a good draft. They look poised to get a good player in the first round, but those 2nd rounders they've stacked up could be important as well. I hope they don't get sucked into the hype of the NHL player's kid that is so prevalent in this draft. It seems drafting NHL offspring has never worked well for the Flames. There is some good talent out there and some interesting projects. I hope they come away with some size and talent.

5. Trim the fat on the team. It's time for a lot of the veterans on this team to exit, stage left. Dennis Wideman is at the top of the list. Matt Stajan is up there too. The Flames need to find a way to get out of Raymond's contract and figure out what to do with Smid. Brandon Bollig needs a new address as well. I don't know what any of these guys do on the Flames except eat up tons of cap space and take roster spots away from players that could possibly help this team.

6. Make smart decisions signing players this summer. I can't emphasize this enough, Treliving needs to be smart as he gets contracts done. Bring back Nakladal. Don't overpay Jooris and Colborne. Recognize you have depth in the minors to keep the salaries down. Pay the guys that make a difference and don't fall into the trap of overpaying the bottom of the lineup. Clean up that mess with smart signings this summer.

Sign Monahan and JG, both under 7 mill, BT I a wizard so it can happen.

Trade/sign a numero uno goalie, the likes of Reimer or Bishop, if that doesn't work then a young guy like Murray.

Trade 2 of the following: Bollig, Wideman, Stajan, Raymond and get a big bodied RW like Brouwer or maybe Ladd and play them on the wing. The best would be Okposo, one can dream!

If no trades then buy-out at least Smid and Raymond.

Sign Ortio to another deal, I would say 2 year deal, $1m/Aav with bonuses if he performs/takes the starter position.

And sign Nakladal, similar 1 year deal, show-me type that he can continue at the NHL what he started this past season. In this scenario I would have to imagine Wideman would be gone, or there is really no space for him to play and for a young guy to step in. We really need Wideman to be traded.

Just wondering what getting ahead of the rebuild means to you?

Picking high isn't a goal for me, or something that's "all OK" it's a consolation for a failure season.

Everyone talks about this, says our window hasn't opened up and so on. Yet you've got Gio and cheap, late 20s Backlund and a bunch of nice middle 6ers in the same age range. There's ending ELCs, RFAs needing paydays left and right. We were not able to capitalize on the cheap years of Johnny or Monahan, unfortunately. It will only get more expensive from here.

They can try but the player has no obligation to do what the team wants him to do.

1. Re-sign Mony and Johnny to long term deals that leave some cap room on the table (6 years at least should be what they sign for)
2. Get Colborne signed to a bridge contract (I know they dont happen but might be a perfect scenario to keep his cap number down while giving him a chance to further blossom and earn a bigger deal)
3. Address Goaltending (Not sure what to do but Ortio signed and a solid starter brought in would be huge)
4. Make the most of the draft. (Flames have really done great with the draft for a few years now, even if we dont win the lottery just keep drafting well to keep the continuity)
5. Settle bottom half of D (I want to see Nakladal, Wotherspoon and Jokipakka as the bottom 3 but also wouldn't mind seeing someone else steal a spot in camp)
6. Coaching staff putting the work in to improve defensive play and puck possession (Even if we roll with the same coaching staff I want to see them evolve the systems over the summer so that they can transition into a team that is harder to exploit)

Not a fan of this lineup. No way Shinkaruk is ready for top line NHL duty. Like the blueline though but hate the Miller trade.
