he was named captain after his second year in the league, after the playoff run in 2007. As stated, he turned down the captaincy when first offered to him in the middle of year 2 with pittsburgh.
what on earth has McDavid done with the Oilers to deserve the captaincy? Other than being McDavid?
Hart? Pearson? Art Ross? Calder? Hell, McDavid didn't even lead them out of the basement...finishing 2nd last in the league, just like last year.

I am wrong on Crosby, although despite not wearing the letter he was their leader.
It's not like the players on the Oilers will revolt or play worse. McDavid has faced a lot of pressure as a kid getting to the NHL. If they were to keep the golden boys and not name him the leader it's another year of confusion. At least in Pittsburgh the team knew that Crosby was going to be their captain.

I keep on seeing Messier calling him with tips so McDavid has to be ready by now.

If Hall isn't traded I can see his nose out of joint.

I dunno, I think Hall has been as complimentary of McDavid as anybody. Personally I think Hall would love nothing more than to have some responsibility of putting that dumpster fire out land on anybody else's shoulders than his own.

There is no greater springboard to winning than losing.

IIRC, it was Ovechkin who definitely turned down the captaincy for the Capitals, early in his career.

They could give a kid the C or Chiarelli could do the smart thing and acquire Zdeno Chara.

He is.
And he will be given the C in a couple of years after Katz sells Captain McDavid to America for $14M in cash.

The organization messed up and made Hall the scapegoat. Now they are feeding McDavid the kool-aid, Hall was drinking. There is a very good chance that this is going to even further fracture the team next season. I can't see how they are going to come together as group if they are not playing for McDavid now.

I don't see an issue with this. He was their best player and will likely be their best for the next few decades

Obvious selection.
However, those other #1s must be feeling it a bit. I'm sure they each thought they would become the main cog and face of the franchise. Well other than Yakupov, it seems he already realizes that he's a bust. After this draft, how will these other #1s feel about going from potential franchise guys to secondary role players.
Hall/rnh have got to be moved this offseason.

There's more to being a captain than just being a really good hockey player.
Obviously I'm not privy to what kind of leadership skills McDavid has off ice. Maybe he's a fantastic leader. But I think it's way too early for this kind of move, so I approve it. Hope it backfires for everyone involved.

I wonder if Hall quietly requests a trade this offseason. He's no longer the centerpiece and being bypassed for captain doesn't look good to his leadership skills and has to bruise his ego. For so long even though the team lost annually he was looked at as the golden boy but now he's just another guy and now that's gone there's really nothing left for him in Edmonton outside of losing.

Just think you can ruin a player that way...if they aren't ready, or if they don't have the respect in the room for what they've done on the ice.
Oilers be oilering I guess

He probably is their best overall player and only player I don't fully hate. Maybe he can color the C a different color for a team he actually likes and troll the entire organization.
