Let's be honest though, that rebuild they have undertaken is a scorched earth type. It will take 5 years to get where they want to go and that's with all sorts of things falling into place as they are hoping, which is unlikely considering the massive holes on that roster at key spots.

If he does go to TO then it was only about money, which is fine and no one should begrudge him. But if he wants even a chance to win, he has to sign elsewhere.

Like Elliot said last night, this scare he is going through might just change everything.
There is no NHL team you would say is minimum 5 years away. You're saying more ,likely 5-7 years. William Nylander will be able to leave via UFA before they can be good? That's ridiculous. You can't even say that about the Canucks right now.

The tax advantage only occurs if Tampa actually offers him market value. At last report they offered him 8.5 million. Not even close enough.
The funny thing is, the tax issue never gets brought up against the Habs and they have the worst taxes in the NHL.
I feel sorry for the team that ends up paying him more than $8.5 million. Umm maybe I should correct that; I feel sorry for the team (outside of the Leafs) that ends up paying him more than $8.5 million/season. He's good but he's not that good on his own.

No....Im saying it only about the Leafs.

When you burn it to the ground as they have it will take years to rebuild. They may gradually get good enough to get into the playoffs in 3 years or so, but to be a contender to win it all? 5 years....minimum and likely longer...yes.

I mean where are the defensemen coming from? There is Reilly and Gardiner....and?

A bigger question mark is who is the goaltender? Bernier? LOL!

Up front there is JVR, Kadri (and who knows how long he remains a Leaf) Komorov and Nylander.

I dont think you realize how far behind the curve the Leafs are and how deep the holes go.

truly gonna take years and years to get out of it.

The media isn't doing Leafs fans any favours speaking like they are a team that is just as far as the Flames, Jets and Oilers in their rebuilds. They are at the very least two years behind all those teams in the rebuilds. Just because a veteran coach got a team full of NHL castoffs to play respectable hockey en route to a 29/30 finish doesn't mean they will be able to plug a bunch of young guys in with a veteran or two and things will just work out. There's lots of ups and downs and it doesn't happen quickly.

The fact is they are right there with them in the standings. Maybe you're giving those 3 teams too much credit?
The Leafs can match all in prospects.
Edmonton has great 1st overalls, but can't draft after the top 5 if their lives depended on it.
And actually, the Leafs played their best when the Marlies(Future Leafs) joined the team and took over from those "Cast-Offs".
If Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary are all way ahead, why are they where they are?

And they can add Marner in October, along with their top 5 pick and maybe Stamkos. And Rielly is absolutely one of the top young D-Men in the game.
Goalies aren't that hard to find. Even Edmonton got a pretty good one this year.

This sounds more like resting players using the excuse that they're nursing minor wounds

Surgeons will likely remove Steven Stamkos’ top rib on his right side today to alleviate pressure that caused a blood clot to form near his collarbone. “It isn’t a rib like you’d think of, it is much smaller, more like the size of an index finger,” explained Dr. Thomas Forbes, vascular surgeon at Toronto’s Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. Forbes said that rib, which is bonded by the collarbone, constricts blood flow to the vein and can cause clotting with trauma or repetitive motion, such as raising your arms above your head. It isn’t easy to pinpoint a timeline for Stamkos’ return; the Lightning said between one and three months.

"Raising your arms above your head"

You know you're a pure goal scorer when you get blood clots from goal cellies.
