HE isn't retiring. He just counts for 7.6 million (or whtever his cap is, for next year) I think.

Yes he is retiring, if he doesn't retire he's not allowed to sign in the KHL. Whomever owns his rights when he files retirement papers will just be stuck with his cap hit due to it being a 35+ contract

Ah I thought the Wings just gave him permission and the contract would just count as his regular cap hit for next year.

it counts because it's a 35+, no team would agree to pay the contract if he wasn't officially retiring and if they suspend him he can't sign in KHL.

Could the Red Wings trade him to someone who needs to hit the salary floor before he retires?

Are there any teams in that position any more?

edit: nevermind... I see that question was more or less answered on the last page.

Yes... that is what Detroit has been trying to do by all reports.

Carolina, NJ, Coyotes all need significant salary to reach the floor.

Per John Shannon on Twitter

On Datsyuk contract, once terminated,he can not be traded, but cap hit remains. If the Wings are to trade PD,it would be before termination.

We don't know the whole story so maybe there are personal reasons Datsyuk and his family need to walk out on the contract, but if there isn't, I'd be really jaded with this decision and it'd ruin his legacy if I were a Detroit fan.

Post 31 in this thread basically paints it that he has family in Russia and wants to return. I can't fault a guy for that. Hockey is just a job and people have priorities.
