I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

I'm with you, what teenager doesn't play games. A DS or a Vita would be both mine and my fiance's go-to time waster and we're 24

So books suggestions (The Scorpion was in early).
Haha, when I was 16, my mom would have told you to get me a book, too. I would have wanted the DS.

I actually really liked reading when I was a teen, so I'd be ok with either a book or a 3DS. But not non-fiction lol. Loved fantasy / science fiction books. It is a good thing you asked his dad, as different kids like different things. I would have killed for a 3DS when I was 16.

Does he own an iPad? What about a monthly or annual Marvel online subscription?

The feedback his dad gave me was books on fishing or hockey. He isn't a comic/gamer type of kid.

I am leaning towards The Game by Ken Dryden.

If you're a fisherman yourself the gift of taking him out fishing a couple times would be a great gift. No one likes being stuck at home for too long.

I am not a fisherman but I agree the gift of time is the greatest and he has given me and my boy plenty of his time.

Nothing to do with fishing or hockey, but this is my favorite book and I recommend it to anyone:

Ok I may be lampooned for this as being out of touch for what a 16 yr old fishing and hockey player might like. Perhaps it is because I just tore through this and loved it:

Podcast: Dan Carlins Hardcore History Series : Blueprint for Armeggedon

It is a six part series (I think) about the First World War. Truly fascinating story telling and heartbreaking at the same time.

If he likes it then he will be about 20 hrs down the rabbit hole before it is finished. If he doesn't like it, well it is FREE so nothing lost.

Also at sixteen he should know the major details of the war so following it is not as tough as some of the other subjects he has tackled.

My two cents

I like the e-reader suggestion. If he likes to read he will use it for years.

He has an iPad, so the e-reader would be redundant, wouldn't it?

Not necessarily.

iPads aren't exactly great for reading with the backlight. Imagine reading a book on your laptop. Sure you can do it, but it's not great on the eyes.

Readers have a flatter light that makes it more like reading a page.

Personally, I put iBooks into 'Dark Mode', which makes the background black and the text white. I find that helps.

If he has an iPad i would suggest an Itunes card, he could get apps, movies or books. A nice set of good comfy head phones for his devices would be a great gift if he doesn't already have a set.

Also a nice pair of sunglasses or a nice dressy watch, not really gonna help him during recovery but nice things none the less.
