|
Problem is a one day buying boycott doesn't work unless everyone also parked their cars for one day and didn't use any of the gas that they otherwise would have. If everyone just buys the same amount of gas as before, but simply does so on a different day instead, have we really changed anything? Not by my math.
Any besides, as mentioned elsewhere, oil companies aren't just owned by big name billionares. As two quick examples, for less than $60 you too can own a piece of Encana ( ECA) or Canaidan Natural Resources ( CNQ) which are both at or near record hights today. Then you too can reap crazy profits!

Well if you are to buy one of those, buy Encana, they have less of a rape and pillage mindset.
I think this is the genius of the public company system. A company can do pretty much anything and the ownership is split between so many people that accountability is uncessary. Lots of times people getting screwed actually own part of the company through mutual funds and stuff. Genius. [/b][/quote]
Well a communist government will change all that. Just vote NDP next election. hehehehe

Owners are generally protected from liability, but do have the potential downside of loosing 100% of their equity should something really bad happen. That's the generally accepted risk of ownership though.
A board of governers on the other hand.... those guys head's are always on the line. I hear the pay is good though while it lasts!

Here in the U.S. gas is not being rationed! Of course this is due to the hurricane. In Deland, FL, gas hit $3.00 today  In my area it went from 2.60 the past few days now to 2.75, and I expect it to get to 3.00 around here soon as well. Once it hits 3, I'm protesting.

Wholly crap. Murray Edwards (Flames Owner) controlls 3.46 million shares of CNRL.
Two years ago it was $15, now it is $58 ish.
That is $149,000,000, more that he has made just in that one stock. So do you think we can afford to get right up to the cap. YES!!!
|
Yep... and that's just one of many big holdings he has. Canadian Business Magazine had him listed at $1.2 Billion Net Worth a year ago. Wouldn't be surprized of that had doubled.
Interesting guy too. The bad news is he almost never talks hockey!

$2.90 US per gallon here, up from $2.56 on Monday. Anyone want to do the double conversion?

Most stations here in Calgary will be at $1.06/L by morning. I stopped going to all the big guys ( Esso, Petro, Shell) I have started to go to Gas Plus or 7-11 now for gas.

i think it will help the short-term supply problem that the US will face, but it will reduce confidence in the supply thereby spiking the price.
market confience in commodities is as important to the price as the actual situation.
be afraid.

and yet there will ba a bunch of people lining up to get one of these
Nuts.
Scooter sales should skyrocket.
Incidentally my wife was complaining today that she spent over a $100 to fill both vehicles yesterda and today. She has a point, neither one is good on gas, but what can you do? Trade in for a Smart and Jetta Diesel? By the time you get hit on trade-in value and GST you are out of 20 large. How long would I have to drive to save 20K in gas?
Damn if you do, damn if you don't.
I guess I can always try roller blades........and get a free ride in an ambulance

Lots of things.
Carpool. Take public transit. Ride a bike. Walk. Drive less. Expect that gas prices will go up and don't buy a gas guzzler next time.
See? It's easy!

Actually, we should be on the low end of the scale in the US. Not too many places are cheaper usually. I think Texas and Oklahoma are generally the cheapest states to buy gas in.
If it's $2.90 here it's well over $3 in a lot of places.
Still, given your price of $1.24 per liter and ours of $0.94 per liter, there is a huge difference between Wichita, KS and Calgary.

I am driving less, not sure if it's because of gas prices....but I like to think I've made a subconscious decision to do that.
Unfortunately, not everybody has the luxury of being able to buy a small car, or use public transit, or walk or ride a bike to work. People need to remember that not everybody is in the same situation with the same options.

So how many people have been getting those ######ed chain emails the last few days? Boycot gas stations! Write to your MLA!
Yeah, gas is expensive. Yeah, it has a lot to do with New Orleans. Yeah it sucks. But deal with it!!! There are a lot of things that we enjoy in Canada (like.....no hurricanes) and if I have to pay a little extra at the pump/carpool/walk/buy a different car to live here so be it.
Yeesh.
