He was a second liner for us... he was a third liner on Chicago. If you want to pick up a 2nd liner for a late second round pick that's what you gotta look for.
Who's a 3rd line guy that if you think if you gave him 3 or 4 extra minutes a game with 2nd unit PP time could produce at a 2nd line level? Keeping in mind that we'll have a cap squeeze so he'll need to make somewhere in the 2-2.5M range.

Bollig: dime a dozen grinder that can be found easily via UFA or your own prospect pool. Maybe you could pawn him off somewhere for future consideration, but still very unlikely.
Wideman: you'd have to take back another teams bad contract in return. A poor defensive defenseman who's coming off a poor offensive showing and who's coming off a lengthy suspension isn't going to attract anyone. A buyout will cost 2 million for 2 more seasons so you might as well just keep him, hope he gets close to last years level, and then have 5.25 million come off the books after next season.
Smid: same as Wideman with regards to buyout. Smarter to just keep him for one more season then stretch it out over 2. Also, despite not earning his current salary he's been a steady, stay at home #6/7 this year. But he does have a cap hit of 3.5 million and it's going to be really hard to find a trade partner. We also have no slam dunk D prospects ready to graduate full time next year.
Raymond: just not an NHL player anymore. No GM is going to be interested in him. Would be worth buying him out, I highly suspect that's what will happen in the summer.

It's beginning to sound like Smid might not play again, in which case he spends next year on LTIR and then retires. In that case, his cap hit is moot and trading him isn't even an option.
While there are no slam-dunk D prospects ready in the system, there are some OK options in Wotherspoon, Kulak, and (if they bring him back) Nakladal. If Wotherspoon can find the chemistry he once showed with Hamilton, that could be a passable second pairing:
Brodie – Giordano
Wotherspoon – Hamilton
Jokipakka – Engelland
Kulak/Nakladal
Could get by with that.

A lot of people were saying Smid was done last off-season and it wasn't the case. Knowing Smid's heart, I doubt he's done.

I'm not questioning his heart at all. But at some point, the body just says no.
In fact, I'd lean the other way. Knowing Smid's heart, I suspect he tried to come back and play this year even though he knew he was at risk of further serious injury. Sure enough, the injuries came, and I have to wonder how much he has left.

I thought Treliving did a fantastic job this deadline improving the prospect pool and adding some picks.
Granlund, Hudler, Russell out
Shinkaruk, 2nd-16, 4th-18, Pollack, Jokkipakka, 2nd-16 that could become a 1st.

I suspect the Flames would prefer he ends up on LITR but given who he is - he will likely be back.
