Would people stop writing off Hunter Smith! The guy is in his 1st year as a pro and big guys like that always take longer.
A 6'7 240 pound guy who can throw devastating body checks, fight, stick up for teammates and pot 10+ goals is a valuable commodity to have. Chris Simon was a valued player in his day.

All the best to Hunter Smith, but Chris Simon had over 300 NHL points and was over a PPG in the OHL.
You gotta think Brad puts in a claim on Stalock no?
Why must we claim every waiver players? Stallock is no better than Hiller. I would rather see Ortio play most of the rest of the season to see what he's capable. So far he's been good the last 3 games and if he keeps up he might get the backup gig next season. If he fails then tough for him.
Which begs the question, why is Hiller not on this list
Good question. Zero chance he gets traded, even with retained salary. And really what is the point of playing him any more this year? Rather see Poulin, or any other waiver wire or UFA pick up.
If they called up Poulin, somebody has to play at Stockton.
Its quite amazing - a few months ago Berra strung together a series of strong performances and there were some media anointing him a steal of a trade for the Avalanche.
Now he is on the waiver wire.
he lost his job while injured, just finished a conditioning stint iirc
Berra is what he is - a high-ceiling goalie who is fairly inconsistent. That is the bane of a lot of goalies in the NHL - inconsistency. It is often the difference between a very good starter, to a poor backup that gets waived.
How inconsistent Berra is, and what his inconsistencies are (i.e. - can they be corrected) is the question. Did the Flames trade him for a 2nd because the offer was too good to refuse? Or did they feel whatever made him inconsistent was more or less 'un-coachable', and thus they were going to cut bait with him anyways? I guess we will find out if they pick him off the waiver wire or not.
He is a big goalie with amazingly fast legs. That is one thing I remember Clint talking about when he was in the organization - how Berra had amazingly fast legs for a goalie his size. Didn't hear anything else good or bad in terms of specifics, so I have no clue. We all saw him do well at times, and we all saw him playing poorly.
He is signed for next season, but that may not be the end of the world either - it would take more to re-sign Ramo again I would guess, unless the Flames are going to wait until the last hour.
I personally would pass and see who else is available in the off-season. I don't anticipate finding a legitimate starter from the list of names that I have off the top of my head that I remember being available, anyways.

If you believe Burke we got a 2nd because he was not being shopped and that was the lowest he'd let him go for.
I personally would rather not have any of Ortio, Hiller or Ramo back next year and Berra at 1.45m is a solid backup option; especially if we are going to rely on the backup to play 25-35 games. He might give us some stinkers but he will also steal a few, which is not something we can say about any of the goaltenders we have this year.

I hope not. He's a familiar name and a guy with NHL experience, but hasn't shown promise of being a legit starter. Not an upgrade on Hiller IMO
Yeah, that's just not true since a cardboard box is an upgrade on Hiller at this point. Not saying that BT should claim Berra, but he has at least been decent in a limited role the last two seasons.
Ramo - solid goalie, weak point was early this year behind bad team D. Put together a very solid streak of consistent quality play
Ortio - Fairly solid recently with a lot of GA against Ott with a team wide breakdown of 3 g in less than 3 min. Still needs to show consistency over a longer term
Hiller - let's keep it simple, he was being given the ball and could have elevated his trade value but didn't. Consistency in a good way is out the window
Berra - some good games but questions of consistency , maybe coachable
Laich's gal - definitely not Backlund with a wig. Things got real weird here with that idea
