Ortio was terrible on goals 3 and 4. 3, he should never ever get beaten over his shoulder from that angle. If that was Hiller, he'd be getting crucified. As for goal 4, it's a goal. He's outside his paint, which is fair game for skaters, plus he puts his arm up and makes contact with Ryan. Maybe he was trying to instinctively defend himself, but it doesn't make up for the fact he was way out of position. Sorry, he didn't have a good night tonight. He should start the next game, because hey, the alternative is still worse.
The way this team defends concerns me. Been an issue all season, with all the players. Gio and Brodie have often been chasing shadows in their own zone and giving up awful goals, the rest of the defence hasn't been much better bar the recent 2 call ups. Forwards haven't helped in this regard either. Now, we either have a group of players that are just not good enough to defend effectively over the course of an NHL season, which is a concern. Or, we have a group of coaches that aren't coaching this group in how to defend effectively. Either way, it's a massive massive concern and if Hartley can't get more out of this group next season, his position(and that of his coaches) has got to be under scrutiny.
We were outworked and outfought by a faster hungrier team tonight. No excuse for that pathetic 3rd period, none whatsoever.
As for all this "2 Matthews points", please GTFO! Thats classic Oiler mentality and its downright embarrassing, no matter which way you slice it. Getting him or Laine won't matter if we believe that efforts like what we saw tonight are in any way acceptable, at any stage of a season. Get em in tomorrow for a bag skate, gutless performance.

Aside from goaltending issues, is our D really that bad (players) or is there perhaps a coaching issue here? I just don't understand...
Talent is there to be a top 15 defense but the coaches high risk system focused on transition rather than structured defense means that the team will give up more scoring chances than other teams and the goaltending simply hasn't been good enough.

Constantly beat on dump and chases.
Couldn't clear the puck worth ****.
39.47% corsi for in a game where Gio and Brodie were 62% Corsi for.
Successfully convincing me that Kris Russell is a top 4 defenseman.
Drags everybody down and kills momentum. THen when the team changes they're behind the 8-ball.

I may have to stop watching this season... I can't cheer for "Matthews points," I can't cheer for other crappy teams to win so the Flames sink deeper into the basement, and I can't bear to continue witnessing all the dead weight on this team.
I absolutely HATE losing and never cheer for it.
But when a game like this happens, I just tell myself the Flames were the better team overall, and the loss might help us get a better player in the draft.
Not cheering for it, just using it to help calm my anger at having watched a loss.

That was a brutal third period and anyone blaming Ortio needs to check their heads, the Sens had way too much time and space on every goal. This is why possession teams win games and turtling dump and change teams compete for Patrick Laine and Auston Matthews.
The 3rd and 4th Senator goals were both pretty bad by Ortio IMO. One was from a bad angle, and Ortio's lateral movement was too slow to get it. The other goalie had Ortio caught out of position from over aggression. But other than that I agree.
I'm not too disappointed. Good night by young guys, with a win in the inverse standings.
Ortio was Hiller bad. Made himself small and was beaten badly on three post shots as this game could have been a blowout if those shots are a few inches over.
He wasn't that bad either. Made some great saves to keep the Flames lead intact until the defence decided to take the rest of the night off.
People want Ortio to be the answer so bad it taints their view. Hiller has been called a bantam level goalie in here for better performances than what Ortio just put up. He was pretty awful tonight.
Lots of respect for the way Jooris has scratched and clawed his way into the league, but he rarely has any positive impact on games this year. Could have easily won it.
Forget Auston Matthews... I just checked his stats on HDB and the guy I want is his teammate with the awesome handle, Severin Blindenbacher. That sounds like a name my kid made up and I want a flames blindenbacher jersey.
